City Council pulls reins Cofield named to Hall of Fame
on horse drawn carriages
By Mary Judson
South Jetty editor
Negative response from commu-
nity members concerned about traf-
fic and sanitary issues caused the
Port Aransas City Council to drop
an ordinaliv.i; iliac would liave al-
lowed horse drawn carriages in the
city limits.
“For many reasons, including traf-
fic, consideration of the horses,
street cleaning equipment. . . we
should not move forward on this,"
said Councilmember Maggie
Guscott said at a meeting June 19.
Mayor Glenn Martin said he had
received input by all means, except
horse drawn carriage, and all of it
was negative. He said he would
choose another battle rather than go
to hat for this.
The proposal came from
Councilmember Jay Kenigsberg who
said he contacted the mayor, hut his
request to give the proposal a 24,
48 or 96-hour test was not received
positively. He said he does not agree
with the mayor that to do so would
be setting a precedent.
Councilmember Mark Grosse said
he does not have problems with the
proposal, hut, like the mayor, would
choose another battle.
Guscott said the idea should he
given to the city planning firm re-
cently contracted by the city.
Roy Graham, owner of Mustang
Riding Stables, the company propos-
ing to offer the horse-drawn carriage
rides, said he has had many people

Martin told Graham he appreci-
ated the offer of the service and that
at a later date the city might recon-

A motion to approve the second
reading of the ordinance failed, with
Kengisberg casting the only “yes” vote.

Upon learning that he was to be
inducted into the Hall of Fame,
Cofield said, “I’m impressed that
they thought that much of me, but I
was also puzzled by the difference
between Boatman of the Year and
the Hall of Fame. 1 didn’t know what
that (Hall of Fame) was.”
Cofield, who now lives in the
Flour Bluff area of Corpus Christi,
has been inactive for the past 15
years, so he was unaware that a Hall
of Fame had been created to honor
past or present members for years
of dedicated service to the organiza-
tion.
He has been gone king enough
that many of the current Boatmen
don’t know him, and some who do
thought he was dead.
“The rumors of my demise are
greatly exaggerated,” he said.
He is alive, hut not well.
In March, he was treated for the
flu, hut “nine days into a ruptured
appendix, I lost kidney function,” he
said.
He is on dialysis three times a
week for four hours, and is waiting
on a transplant.
“I didn’t know anything about kid-
neys till I was one,” he said, the tears
surfacing again.
He is too ill to work on the tug
Hall of Famer Bill Cofield and wife, Rosie
boats, hut he and his wife, Rosie,
have a karaoke business. For a short
time, they had a show on PBS called
Rosie and The Captain Karaoke
Show. They also appeared on NBC
behind Conan O’Brien for about six
weeks. Some of their guests were
Port Aransas residents.
He may have traded his rods and
reels for a microphone, hut the salt
air still courses through his veins and
his love of fish and fishing is undi-
minished.
“We make a special trip to Port
Aransas about once a month because
we love eating the fish and chips at
the Island ( afe," he said.
It won’t he the Island Cafe’s fish
and chips, hut when Cofield makes
the trip to Port Aransas in July to
accept his award, he can enjoy the
fish and chips cooked and served by
the “Fry Daddies” of Port Aransas -
the cooking team from the Port
Aransas Boatmen, Inc.
