HISTORY OF THE CLASS
NINETEEN NINE
It Has a beautiful balmy day in
September 1901 the birds sang their
sweetest songs the bees hnmmed mer-
rily while sipping honey from the rose
all nature seemed filled with joy
Meandering toward the Jefferson
school house two little children were
seen At first sight one supposed that
they were a little boy of some eight or
nine summers accompanied by his twin
sister However as they Beared the
building where many other little happy
frolicking children had gathered it was
discovered that the first supposition
was incorrect for the supposed twins
were no twins at all but two little boys
One wore a checked apron and an enor
motis sunbonnet which was intended
to protect bis delicate complexion But
needless to say een that did not keep
the freckles off Looking at the other
bashful little fellow there was seen the
dimpling counteniuce of Lee Snead
At last after several adventure the
boysfound themselves in Mrs Vin
sons room Th le they learned the
snrprnsing facts that The dog can
run and Jack has a hat
a Just about this time an important
event occurred Johnny astonished his
roommates by discarding his aprons
and emerging like a butterfly from its
cocoon in a new suit of real store
bought clothes In due time they were
promoted to Miss Prestons roomwhere
Reading and riting and rithmetic
Were taught to the tune of a hickory
stick
One day the news was made known
that there was a new pupil at school
Of course all the children were eager to
see her There stood a ehy little girl
bashfully sucking her finger while she
industriously twisted a long golden
curl that hung over her shoulder
Our boys were delighted when she was
placed in the class with them She
speedily won the love of her classmates
and became her teachers favorite pupil
This little girl who was so timid and
shy has struggled and worked to at-
tain the high mark of a graduate ofl909
Perhaps you recognize in her our class
prophet Atala Rives
Now about this time another little
towheaded girl entered school This
time it was not a child with golden
curls but with piglails which protruded
from her cranium like those of Sis
Hopkins She wore a little blue calico
dress rubbers on her feet and carried a
large umbrella though the sun was
shinning bsightly In one hand she
held a new lunch basket whose con-
tents she occaslonly investigatedbring
ing forth a slice of pie or some other
delicacy She too was made one of
the class As mischief and pranks al
ways delighted her she is very fond of
practical jokes when she is not the
victim This anything but angelic
child now stands before you as Histo-
rian of her class
We four went on together progress-
ing from one grade to the next until
we secured our certificates of promotion
to the High school Here we were
met by Clairece She came aB a little
girl from the country with rosy cheeks
and sparkling eyes We found that
she was very industriour she stndiPB
all the time oh so bard Her favorite
amusement is using Lee whose seat is
in front of her for a pin cushion Of
course I do not mean to intimate that
Lee is at all soft Clairece is also very
ford of music asevince d by the many
whistling serenades given her Caily at
school
It was only a short time ago that
Grace joined us She came from dear
old Colorado where the hills caress the
sky Owing to her charming manners
she soon became one of the most popu-
lar girls in the class and later was
elected Valedictorian
I do not pretend to relate the long-
ings and ambitions that each of ns has
had nor the struggles of defeat that
were ours aB rung by rung we climbed
the ladder of learning Some days to
us were dark and drearyj made so per-
haps by indifference or carelessness
while other days when we had diligent-
ly attended to onr duties were rs bright
and beautiful as aMidSummer Nights
Dream
Now that we stand upon the top round
of the ladder on which we have been
climbing upward for the past eight
years we may gladly sorrowfully glance
back over the slippery rungs by which
we mounted Gladly that we have

been made stouter more rugged and
braver for the trials and hardships to
be encountered and overcome Sorrow-
fully that those happy days are gone
never to return that in the hereafter
when this old bell peals forth its chimes
at 815 it will be ringing for other ears
than ours For among the ever chang-
ing scenes of life our hearts will oft
times turn to thee our Alma Mater our
glorious Alma Mater
And dear classmates as we Btand
ready to start upon lifes journey and
our paths seem to separate let us re-
solve to pursue ourduties with tenacity
of aim and fixedness of purpose that
knows no faltering brooks no defeat
and heeds no t ers that by our ex-
ample percharfce some weary wanderer
may be incited to strive more earnestly
in the paths of duty
Let us keep in mind our motto We
finish to begin It is out of school
life into lifes school Let this day be
the beginning of six useful and true
lives and why should it not be so For
Our lives are songs
God writes the words
We fashion the rhyme and meter
And if they are sad
We can make them glad
And if sweet we can make them
eweeter
Let us be careful of our todays for
tomorrow they will be added to our
yesterdays Make our efforts such that
though we meet but seldpm in this
vale of tears we may have a home with
the Blestabove Let us then
Do noble deeds
Not dream them all day long
And thus make life death and that

CLASS PEOPHECY
Friends and Class mates one and all
Greeting
It is my purpose as Class Prophet
of this graduating class t3 paint in my
feeble way the horoscope of theBe my
comrades
I believe that sooner or later there
comes to every boy or girl dreamB as-
pirations for a higher and nobler life
dreams of ambition They may lie
dormant for years or perhaps covered
with the sloth of habit they may come
only in dim shadowy visions that feed
the eye like the glories of an ocean sun-
rise but you may be sure they will
come Even before one is aware the
bold adventurous goddess whose name
is Ambition and whose doner is Fame
will be toying with the feeble heart
and as ehe pushes her venture with a
bold hand she makes timidity strong
and weakneas valiant
The way of men and womens hearts
will be foreshadowed by what good-
ness lies in them coming from above
and from environments around but a-
way foreshadowed is not a way made
and the making of our waj s comes oniy
from that quickening of rssolve which
we call Ambition It is the spur that
makes man struggle with destiny it is
heavens own incentive to make pur
pose great and achievement greater
Hence dear friends it would be strange
if we as girls and boys of this gradua
ting class did not feel a dawning of new
resolves here at this crises of our lives
We are now as it were only at the star-
ting point from which we mnst leap
into the tide and breast the strong cur-
rent of life
Since the lot has fallen1 to me to
dream dreams of the future of each of
these girls and boys to prophesy into
what special channel each life will
drift to build castles and people them
with real men and women the first of
these A winters eve a crowded ball-
room scores of dancers happy hearts
flitting to and fro to the sweet strains
of Loves Dreamland or Hearts
Whispers1 Among this happy throng
my gaze is arrested by one who seems
the belle of the ball A daughter of
the gods divinely fairund most divine
ly tall Her charming simplicity of
manner and sweet graciousness diffus-
ing as much fragrance as the blushing
American Beauties that adawn her
brow Her every gesture claims my
undivided attention so familiar is that
face my rivited gaze abon discloses the
fact that this fairest flower is none
other than my old friend and classmate
Grace Johnson May her bark glide
happilyon through that channel of tur-
bulent waters known as Society
This dream vanishes the scene is
changed another presents itself It is
An elegantly equipped office in the
heart of Gotham the constant click of
numerous typewriters the busy pen of
copyists at their variouB desks togeth-
er with the knitted biow of the secre
tary as he sits examining the numerous
instruments that await his attention
all these bespeak the heavy business
transacted by this great firm At an
other desk is seated the hero of this
dream that greater light around which
these lesser lights revolve the boy of
our dear old school days who each
morning gladdened the heart of every
maid with the sweetdst flowers from
his country home this great attorney
and philanthropist John Hill who by
his constant application and untiring
peraeverence has gradually climbed to
the pinnacle of fame in this great me-
tropolis
Another picture my fancy paints
Under southern skies in the land where
nature reigns supreme in sunny Cali-
fornia a little studio the sun shining
warmly without and through the open
casement the drowsyhum of bees steal-
ing sweets from the honeysuckles that
embower the window lulls the
air to gentle rest Beside the open
casement at a desk is seated the lady
of my dream a golden haired crea
ture of moat exquisite femininity The
smile that lights her eye and the su-
perb intelligence radiant on every feat-
ure seem but reflections of that greater
light within whose rayB shine forth on
every page of her splendid writings of
both prose and poetry and the name of
Beulah Braden has become illustrious
throughout the entire literary world as-
a writer of universil ability
I ask yon again my dear hearers to-
go with me to a little city in the foot-
hills ol Massachusetts a city famous

for its numereus and varied manufac-
turing industries the city of Lynn As
we wend our way past these busy fac
tories our gaze is arrested by a name
on the facade of an enormous structure
and upon entering we find pur old class-
mate Lee Snead to be owner and op-
erator of this great manufacturing in-
dustry the output of which assists in
supplying this great commonwealth
We always knew that Lee had an in-
ventive mind together with great pow
erss of concentration so are not sur-
prised to find him the power back of
this great enterprise controlling the
hearts and hands of several hundred
lives
Another dream is of a crowded the-
atre a gay throng of expectant hearts
anxiously awaiting the sound of the
gong Suddenly there is a breathless
silence as behind the glittering foot-
lights our new prima donna Clarice
Glass glides forth with the superb
grace and splendor of the oriental prin-
cess She is starring in the seasons
latest hit The College Girl
And now dear listeners the dream
of my own future is to attain the noto-
riety of a Charles Iana Gibson or a
Howard Chandler Christy in delight-
ing the world with crayon and brush
My prophecies and dreams of these
dear lives are over It has very likely
occurred to you my listeners that I
have set these lifeboats of my come
rades adrift in strange channels and
thst my fancy has erred in these vis-
ions if so we must await the gentle
hand of Time which slowly unfoldf the
hidden years
In conclusion my dear classmates I
would have you remember that Re-
solve is what makes a man manliest
not weak resolve but that strong and
indefatigable determination which
bears down difficulties and danger Re-
solve has been the keynote of success
