The Ferndruckcra or the
far printing machine is the in-
vention of a German and the
German postoffices arc using it
The English of it is electricfar
printer It is like a typewriting
machine the text of the message
is printed on the keyboard of the
sender and it automatically rc
proc cs itself on the kejboard
of receiver Messages can be
sent in duplicate to any number
of addresses which makes it con-
venient in multiplying press mes-
sages to newspapers
Bill Smith Editor
In the great city daily there are
three classes of men those who write
those who edit and those who neither
write nor edit but direct In the
country office there is usually but one
man He writes edits and directs
himself He does considerable more
but this alone will show him to be
versatile For instance
The Weekly Press is published in
Pressville III Bill Smith is editorin
chief and owner Working under Bill
is
The managing editor Wm Smith
The city editor Billy Smith
The news editor Willie Smith
The editorial writer W Smith
The exchange editor Mr Smith
The Sunday editor Husband of Mrs
Smith
The pressman Smith
The foreman Smith
The fighting editor Mrs Smith
Thus it will be seen that Bill Smith
is pretty much the whole thing
in his country office Western Pub-
lisher
Defining a Dollar
Ail exchango gives the following
definition of a dollar
A dollar is what some people prom-
ise to pay for their paper It is some-
thing that a newspaper man enjoys
more in anticipation than in reality
It is the price of a days work for
some men and a nights drinks for
others It is what a wife frequently
needs but seldom has It is the pow-
er that makes or unmakes men It is
the hardest thing to get and the easiest
thing to got rid of known to mankind
It is a blessing in a small measure It
is a delusion and a smyre and we are
all abusingithe delusion

AN APPRECIATED COMPLIMENT
The Palestine Daily Herald
is one of the neatest best edited
and most interesting papers that
caincs to our office Its makeup
is so elegant and its ads all prac-
tically correctly set The Ham
ilton boys are natural born print
ers and newspaper men and super-
excellent gentlemen as we know
from acquaintance and we arc
glad to see evidence of the pro-
nounced success which they arc
having with their paper and print-
er Mineola Monitor
The Herald appreciates such a
compliment from Kirb Foster
In our early journalistic days
some fifteen years ago Kirb was
one of our faithful assistants and
he is both a gentleman and a
scholar
When Uncle Sam takes hold of
Panama revolutions will cease
A full blood Indian has just
finished his four years novitiate
at Rome and has been admitted
to priesthood in the Catholic
church
That 64000 majority forMc
Clellan in New York is quite a
shock to Eoosevelt and ho is
going to watch his home State
mighty close the next two years
A LAY SERMON
BV HAMILTON HAMILTON
Oh listen to the band
Away back yonder when Bill
Shakespeare was doing some of
his best literary stunts he called
attention to the fact that music
had marvelous power And this
too before Hiawatha and
Bill Bailey had been knocked
into musical shape by the ragtime
professors But even in that day
before the grand piano was spank-
ed in musical harmoiry by a sweet
3oung girl or before the steam
caliope followed the circus par-
ade down Spring street the pow-
er of music was recognized And
today when tho world is a large
package of poetry and music
ranging from the whistling 003
on the street who gives us John-
nie Get Your Gun in high C to
the master musical organizations
like ParnelPs and Sousas bauds
or Madam Songbird we still pay
tribute to the matchless power of
music
There arc as many different
kinds of music as there are im
pulses in mankind And music
can put a man in about as many
different moods as a drove of
wasps can punch holes in a wasp
nest in a whole summer I once
heard of music curing a case of
rheumatism The rheumatism
was attached to an old gentlemen
and the music to a gentle 3oung
thing next door and when the
gentle young thing would play the
old gentleman would get so wrathy
he would forget his rheumatism
In a town where I once had a
charge I passed two musical
numbers on 1113 way home and it
was wonderful the different effect
the two musicians had on me If
one of them was pla3ing when I
passed by it so affected 1113 nerves
that b3 the time I got home I was
ready to kick a hole in the dog or
poison the cat If the other one
was playing I went home fceling
as bouyant as a sack of corks and
with a good word for everybody
and the cook And I honestly
believe one of these small music
boxes could put inc out of busi-
ness in two hours if it only plnycd
half the time
But music is a wonderful thing
It has won 1111113sl battle redeem-
ed in ui a lost soul and brought
joy to 1111113 il 30llI1o swain who
begged yes for an answer So
thorough I established is the po-
tent power of music that in many
countries it is a part of the gov-
ernment equipment of peace Our
reighbor republic of Mexico is
ruled by the show of military
force and the playing of military
music and I doubt seriously if the
arms are as great a preserver of
the peace of those hot blooded
passionate people as is the seduc-
tive music of their great bands
This opinion is based upon a two
years observation and study of
those people
Music that sweet soft seduct
ive harmony of sound and rapture
of sentiment hat makes a man
love like a fool and fight like a
devil is the heart pulse of all the
nations and though a babel of
tongues 11113 confuse the under-
standing music is a universal
language and understood by all
It needs no interpreter but finds
a responsive chord in every heart
But to a bad liver it is as sound-
ing brass and tinkling symbols or
worse noises
The man who cannot appreciate
music beloved had better call in
the doctor
