LET THEM DO IT
The Herald is of the opinion the
reason the split log drag has not here-
tofore been tried out in Palestine is
because one of the critters has not
been laying around handy when it
might have been used Now the Her
ald suggests this Let the autoists
sMollll ua
y r ways Tiave a drag made accordfng to
r f specifications the cost is trifling
and then let them petition the com-
missioners to give it a tryout at the
proper time If they decline then let
those interested in the experiment
provide a team and drag the streets
The team and a man to do the drag-
ging together with the cost of the
drag can be had at a cost that might
be considered trifling The Herald
has 5 of the amount ready for any-
one who wishes to take up the mat-
ter and 5 ought to pretty near pay
for a drag
The people who use the streets
have a right to demand that every
possible effort be made to keep the
streets smooth and usable And if
the commissioners decline to make
the experiment surely they will not
object to individuals trying out the
proposition
The Herald modestly reminds the
city commissioners that there are
others besides the Herald manage-
ment who are insisting that the drag
he given a trial There is absolutely

KEEPING UP THE GAIT
The people of a town cannot stand
stll and expect their town to go for-
ward Cooperation and progress are
absolute essentials to the life of a
town Sometimes we complain that
things are not coming our way as
they should and yet we are making
little if any effort to make them come
If we were all live wh es and were
doing our best all the time to push our
town we would see the results in-
stantly Very few of us we dare say
ever think to send out a live piece of
advertising matter along with our cor-
respondence and yet such advertis-
ing is effective in its general results
Everj envelope that goes out of Pal-
estine should carry a boost for the
town on the back of it and yet such
envelopes are the exception Many
business people spend money with any
and every fake advertising scheme
that offers some of them who never
use7 the columns of the local paper
and yet it is agreed by all sensible
people the world over that a live
newspaper is the best advertisement
any town ever had The paper is a
constant booster for its town but it
makes a sorry boost if it is not lib-
erally and fairly supported There
are many ways to promote the public-
ity of the town but putting advertis-
ing on fences and on wall charts is
not one of them
WOODPECKERS WANTED
Here at last is a kr

the woolfpeckef is a most useful Bird
and efforts are being made to get
some of the birds back on the job out
there It has been found that because
of the absence of the bird the pine
borer is ruiningthousands of acres of
spruce and fir timber There seems
to be after all a use for everything
in this world It is hard some time
to know just what some things are
good for but sooner or later we
know If any of the woodpeckers in
your neighborhood are not working
there is a good job waiting for them

GOOD ROADS IN ARKANSAS
Since 3903 Sabastian country Ark
of which Fort Smith is the principal
town has built fifty miles of ma-
cadam roadway at an average cost of
1000 a mile The material used is
a local sandstone Modern roadmak
ing tools are used crushers steam
road rollers etc and expert road
builders are on the job
It is claimed that these roads have
placed that city and county on a great
boom and they are far outstripping
the rest of the state in material pro-
gress land values having about
doubled all over the county and as-
a direct result Fort Smith has let a
contract for seventytwo miles of pav-
ing to be done in that city This city
realizes that the county was doing
more in the way of public highway
improvement than the city was doing
This contract is said to be the larg-
est single paving contract ever let
by any city in the United States
And does this large expenditure of
money for these improvements pay7
Write and ask any substantial citi-
zen of that city or county

have been built to raise the six mil

This Is a True Catfish Story and Mr
Lee Berryman and Others Will
Make Affidavit to It
Talk about catfish the daddy of all
the catfish tribe was caught and
cooked at Blackfoot recently accord-
ing to a tale told by Lee Benyman
It M Johnson C l Kay Jim Britton
and others These gentlemen were
up in that section of the country
when they came in possession of the
catfish Somebody caught it out of
the river but the Herald did not learn
who caught it Anyway they had the
fish So they borrowed a washpot a
big one and placed in it seventeen
pounds of lard skinned the fish sliced
it up and dropped the slices into the
boiling lard Then it was dipped out
nice and brown and the whole coun-
try was Invited to come and feast
They fed themselves all the people
who would come the cats and dogs
and hogs this lias leference to ani-
mals only and there was left as
much fish as was reported left in the
miracle of feeding the multitude
If you dont believe this story ask
Lee Berryman He says its so And
so do the others

plugged to make their future connec-
tion with thorn when the sewer con-
tractors have completed their contract
and same has been accepted by the
