TALKING ABOUT THE CANDI-
DATES
The Herald is in receipt from
the Palestine Herald of a likeness
of the next Governor oftbe State
of Texas Hon Tom M Camp-
bell of Palestine a man whom
Cherokee county delights to honor
as her own eon and of whom all
Texas is proud It will be the
dawn of a great era for Texas
when Colonel Campbell is in
duoted into the governorship ot
this grand old commonwealth as
we hope and confidently be
lieve ho will be at thenext gen-
eral election If graft we have
as charged its hidingplace will
be unearthed and the perpetra-
tors receive their just deserts
That he is honest none will deny
that he is a capable business man
his career and present prominence
exemplifies If chosen governor
we feel assured his administration
of the affairs of state wouldbe
conducted upon honest practical
and business methods Tom
Campbell has none of the milksop
in his composition He has back-
bone and nerve two elements that
have been sadly needed in the
exeoutive office during six or seven
years We believe the dearest
friend of ColCampbell in Texas
would not dare approach him
with any proposition that was not
based upon honest principles
however much the measure might
appeal to his personal interest
Other candidates may be as pure
as honest as capable as Col
Campbell more than likely they
are but we know the Colonel
and have watched his public
career from the start and it has
been to our mind without spot
or blemish He fills the measure
of an honest capable business-
man and his democracy is of the
stalwart incorruptible and unim-
peachable kind He is of and for
the people and they can do
themselves no greater service than
to rally to his support in the
coming campaign and make him
their governor He will fill the

LOYALTY TO BELIQION
The loyalty of the Jew to the
religious beliefs of the race is
worthy of admiration Today the
houses of the Jews have been
closed in this city Not a few of
them as is ofteu the case with
people of other beliefs when it
comes to celebrating or observing
a holiday butevery one of them
big and little are closed tight
And this is Saturday and usually
a big trade day with them The
Jews keep this day as a religious
duty and this fidelity of the en-
tire race to things religions makes
them a distinctive people in all
the lands of the earth It is this
fidelity to religious beliefs that
gives to the race that sure and
1 strong foundation that has kept
them a distinctive race of people
and has won for themthe respect
and confidence of the races of the
earth In whatever land they
abide the Jews as a rule are
position with honor
and in the interest ot

When Col Tom Campbell is
elected Governor of Texas and
he wakes up some fine morning
and finds the atmosphere impreg
nated with the odor of an Augean
stable therell be something do
ing that would make old Hercules
feel less than 30 cents The cur-
rent of the Colorado would be
turned in a Jiffy and its clear
pallucid water would have a barn-
yard flavor and taste from the
