ORE HUNDRED
TONS A DAY
THAT IS WHAT THE NEW IRON
FURNACE IS DOING AT RUSK
USING COKE
Special to the Herald
Rusk Texas March 17 The most
gratifying thing to the penitentiary
board in Its session here this week
was the report from the new Iron fur-
nace the Sam Lanham in its mar-
velous work using coke instead of
charcoal in the production of pig
IronThis
This furnace has far exceeded the
expectations of Its builders as It was
fully expected it s capacity would be
only fifty tons a day By the use of
coke the capacity has been Increased
to one hundred tons a day
It has been further demonstrated
that Iron can be manufactured here
at a net profit of 925 a ton and tills
fact is calculated to give impetus to
the iron industry in this section In
fact it is confidently expected that de-
velopments along this line will now
begin in earnest The only thing that
has held back the Industry is the fuel
question Now that that Is settled
by the introduction of coke the ex-
haustless iron ore of this section Is
going to yield up its fortunes
It has been proven beyond question
that the iron manufactured here Is of
a very superior quality averaging way
above the average and this fact alone
will always And a ready market for
the output at good figures
The furnace cannot begin to keep
up with the demands made upon its
product
