Senator Bailey speaks in Palestine
one week from today The hour and
place of speaking have not yet been
announced
Though the American secretary of
war is running a government under
the Cuban flag the rumor that Cuba
has annexed the United States is of-
ficially denied t
Tills has been a prosperous week
in old Palestine The Herald to-
gether with the other live business
concerns is feeling good over the
outlook for business in this section
There is no denying but what a big
cotton crop makes big business The
hcenes In Palestine these days are
compared with the good old days
such days being cotton record years
Palestine is getting her full share of
cotton this year
Next week is going to be a big week
in Palestine business circles In ad-
dition to the heavy cotton business
from the country we will have a big
pay day trade In the meantime read
the Herald ads and get wise on the
bargains offered
Strong efforts are to be made to
get a full Democratic vote in every
county in the state in the November
election It is important that every
Democrat in Anderson county vote
that the countys convention strength
may not be cut down
If it is wrong for members of the
party to oppose and criticise a Demo-
cratic nominee why is it that about
thieefourths of the politicians and
ofllceholders in Texas are after
Hearsts scalp He Is the nominee of
the party in New York for governor
A rule should be made to hold good
all dround the circle
A big calming factory at Lindane in
Smith county has made an assign-
ment for its creditors Canning fac-
tory pioflts work out nicely on paper
but somehow the plants have never
been made to pay when operated on
an extensive scale There are many
leiHoiiK why they do not pay the
least of which is not that the people
will not buy the homemade product
at an equal pi Ice with the California

over people and conditions before the

section
The Herald believes the grocery
merchants of the city make a big mis-
take by not using more printers ink
in making public their line of goods
and the prices Many people send
money away from Palestine for gro
ceries because outside houses are
always sending price lists with at-
tractive prices Get busy neighbors
The man of the house ought to
make his presence an inspiration to
the family circle and the woman of
the hSuse ought to live above the
little petty annoyances and make
herself a benediction Fretting nag-
ging and a constant repetition of lit-
tle things will wear out the happi-
ness of any family circle It is also
true of a community or town Let us
be more considerate of each other

Speaking of the new railway era tho
Chicago InterOcean says
Sometimes the new railway comes
frjm the discovery that natural condi-
tions are not as traditionally supposed
to be The new line now pushing
along the Texas coast from Galveston
to the Rio Grande is the result of such
a discovery For more than three
hundred years the southeastern tri-
angle of Texas hasv been set down as-
a desert A railway manager seeking
territory out of which to make a rail-
way shoestring running down from
Colorado pay exploded the tradition
All the country needed to be another
south California was water His pros-
pectors found under it the biggest ar
tesian well reservoir in the country
Since then the name of B F Yoa

Never before has there been such a
demand for farm labor and good
prices are being paid It has been
estimated that Southwest Texas will
lose 200000 bales of cotton this year
on account of the scarcity of pickers
This fact together with the further
fact that the pi ice of new corn is go-
ing skyward and that much corn will
doubtless hnve to be ini > orted before
the next crop comes In ought to af-
ford the farming interests a valuable
object lesson Karnes City News
It teaches the lesson that the farm-
ers of Texas should unite to secure by
immigration or otherwise a more ade-
quate supply of farm labor In this
way the heavy loss from unpicked cot-
ton would not be sustained and suffi-
cient corn would be raibed to obviate
importation If 200000 bales of cot-
ton were lost for lack of pickers this
represents at 50 a bale approximate-
ly 10000000 A tithe of this if spent
in inducing laborers to come to Texas
might have saved the other 9000000

TIMELY FASHION N0IE5
Special to the Herald
New York Oct 13 Just at present
the shops arc particularly alluring
They teem with the seasons novelties
and every day fresh goods are dis-
played on the counters and in the
show rooms to the great joy of lovely
women All womnndom Is intent up-
on the fall styles In millinery cos-
tumes gloves veilings and the end
less acccssoiles that the woman in
the front rank of fashion must own
before she dares consider herself well
dressed and well groomed The actual
wardrobe necessary to a well dressed
woman nowadays contains a formid
aolc number of things and most of
them arc very hard upon a short
pockctbook
With the tempting bewildering ar
ray of new autumn finery before their
eyes women are very likely to buy Uie
pretty frivolous things first and the
necessary ones when they arc forced
to by the severity of the weather
Sometimes they have to feo without
the things that they really need be-
cause they have spent the greater part
of their allowance upon an extrava-
gant hat borne perfect dream of waist
or upon an exquisite necklace which
cost out of all proportion to Its value
because it Is a fair Imitation of a
real jeweled one
Lace shows no decline to popularity
in spite of the dire prophesies of fail-
ure made by certain depressing mor-
tals And the old rule of imitations
affecting the popularity of the real
has been proved as false in its way
never has anything been so imitated
and travestied as Irish Lace Yet It
holds its own and promises this win-
ter to he more extravagantly used
than It was last year
Broadcloth heads the list of fab
rics this fall as it did last winter for
the dressier sorts of suits those you
wear to afternoon receptions and teas
and for anything else that calls Itself
a daytime affair Plenty of the whole
costumes which Paris has decreed for
this winter are made of it more of
them though of marquisette that
wonderful stuff that is like a grena
dlneetheriallzed Marquisette by the
way came in last spring but so late
that it practically missed the season
and so starts off this season like
something brand new
Veils are more important than ever
in the calculations or the fashionable
women and tho swathing floating
folds of chiffon net etc are tremen-
dously becoming if artistically adjust-
ed The lace veil bids fair to be a
winter favorite and the Tosca belts
wltlrt decorative borders are popular
White net dotted in black and em
broidered in a vine trailing floral de-
sign above a hem of white chiffon is
one of the new things
Short coats fitted or loose and fan-
ciful pelerinelike wraps are favorites
with Parisian furtiers Some of the
models are braid trimmed others
adorned witli laces and embroidery
but the practical fur coat Is still at
its best when of fine quality and un-
trimmed
The Parisian fad for shawllike
draperies has brought out some ex
quisite shawl scarfs In crepe in soft
silk In lace the crepe and silk
scarfs being elaborately embroidered
Grapes are much in evidence upon
the new hats and the most luscious
color effects are obtained in them for
they shade through many of the fash-
ionable colorings and are particularly
effective in the browns purple blues
grays and greens Golden yellow
white and purple grapes are often
combined and flowers or plumes are
frequently used with the fruit
Soft silk snshes with embroidered
scalloped edges are seen upon some
of the sheer French gowns They are
either used as a short waisted girdle
or arc passed around the waist sev-
eral times drawn to the top of the
girdle swathing in the back and tied
there tlie falling ends giving a short
waisted Empire suggestion The
same arrangement Is good for any silk
or ribbon sash
Very loose woven soft Scotch tour-
ist suitings thick yet light and show-
ing of Irregular checks and plaids are
made especially for traveling coats
and motor coats and are taking ex
tremely well
Sleeves are a little changed in line
but are a trille smaller and on the
whole a trille longer than they were
during tlu > summer They are fre-
quently iiiiicIi draped and slashed and
complicated in design
