Lyman Abbott
Dr Lyman Abbott the famous cler-
gyman and author was born in Rox
bury Mass December 18 1833 Ho
graduated from the college of the City
of New York In 1S53 and shortly after
entered upon the practice of law in
Boston But the pulpit possessed
greater attraction for nim than tho
bar and after engaging In law prac-
tice for a few years he gave up that
profession for the ministry In 1SC0
he was ordained a Congregational min-
ister His first charge was at Terre
Haute Ind where he remained five
years leaving the Indian cjty to be-
come pastor of the New England
church In New York City In 1869 he
resigned his pastorate to devote him
self to literature For some years he
was one of the editors of Harpers
Magazine and was also editor of the
Christian Union with Henry Ward
Beecher whom he succeeded as pas-
tor of Plymouth church Brooklyn in
1888 During the past six years Dr
Abbott lias devoted himself almost
entirely to literary work He Is re-
nowned as a scholar and critic as
well and Is undoubtedly the most
noted theologian of the present day

The high pressure and cold area is
over the upper valleys It has caused
fair weather from the lakes ito the
Rocky Mountains and carried lower
temperature east to the Atlantic
coast with the freezing line extending
from Baltimore southwestward to Ten-
nessee thence through eastern Texas
The czro temperature In the north-
west has entirely disappeared except-
ing in Minnesota and Wisconsin
where It Is 2 degrees below A de-
pression has appeared In Montana and
is raising the temperature rapidly in
that section accompanied by rain In
Oregon and Washington The storm
over Tennessee has disappeared off
the coast It was attended by rains
east of the Mississippi and south of
the lakes
Dry weather with stationary tem
perature tonight and warmer Wednes-
day Is indicated in the vicinity of Pal
estine
