GENEROUS OFFER DECLINED
The Herald has been offered the
series of articles to be written by
Colonel Frederick Upham Adams of
New York now In Houston in expla-
nation or the Waters Pierce Oil com-
pany troubles in Texas The Herald
must gracefully decline the offered
manuscript not that it falls to appre-
ciate the ability of Colonel Adams for
there Is no more forcible writer be-
fore the American people today but
the Houston Post has warned us and
all the people that we should not
trust a new man from the north to tell
us Texas history The Post made
this suggestion when Frank Putnam
another distinguished writer of New
York arrived in Texas to tell the peo-
ple a few things that were escaping
public notice The Post would have
none of Mr Putnam but has gladly
agreed tp mse Colonel Adams articles
inXdeleilSeTofthetfWatere Pierce com-
pany wittiout compensation of
course The Herald is old fogy
enough to believe that the court rec-
ords ot Travis county reveal more
ot the history or the Waters Pierce
company than Colonel Adams will
possibly be able to pick up from out-
side sources And beside the Colonel
is a stranger in the state and might
not know just all the time how de-
pendable his information regarding
this famous case and infamous com-
pany is In the meantime Colonel
Adams could get some very valuable
data for his articles from the attor-
ney generals department To be ab-
solutely frank the people ot Texas
need to be very cautious just at this
time lest they be charmed into Tairy
land and see fancies rather than tho
real truth ot this whole matter
This weather is a promoter ot good
cheer and good rellowshlp It also
tends to make business good
The Temple Tribune Is talking
about a bossless and a lobbyless leg-
islature That Is the one that will
also be memberlcss
The Herald Is full or good business
announcements again today Read
every ad in these columns They are
business talks by good business mon
and are worth your consideration
Tom Perkins or the McKInney Ga-
zette president of about everything
organized In the state recently has
now been made a full flooged member
of the Mothers Club
Things held up remarkably well
during the month of November de-
spite the money stringency The Her-
ald has reports from several or the
leading business concerns or the city
declaring that business was very sat-
isfactory December will prove a
still better month
When you hear a fellow standing
around the streets knocking certain
people or certain concerns always
rind out what Is hurting him before
giving too much cerdlt to his wise
comments Many a fellow has been
fired in his day because he was worth
nothing to his employer
Denver Is experimenting with a new
treatment for drunks The victim Is
caught when his Jag Is at its most
talkative stage and a phonographic
record made of his conversation This
record Is held over the head of the
drinker with the threat ifbe repeats
his offense the record will be put on
the market and made public

The Herald gave Palestine people a
pretty fair synopsis or the presidents

you will notice right carerully you
will observe that the Herald has a
habit ot giving the news flrst hand
This is not the result or accident or
special zeal but comes from paying

diction in the matter Thus Is At-

tained in a great Injustice against
this beloved corporation that has
done so much for the Illumination of
the great Lone Star wilderness How
rar will the attorney general be al-
lowed to go against this benevolent
institution that spends Its hard earn-
ed money among Its Mends
The whole question at Issue in Tex-
as Is simply this Do you as a voter
and as a private citizen striving for
the best Interests or the state and the
whole people endorse the policy of a
public official serving the people at a
small salary and at tho same tlms
drawing larger salaries or Tees rrom
corporations subject to government

In our political lite then you know
what to do H you oppose such al-

MUSICAL SENSATION
Miss Northera Barton Delights the
Most Fastidious Critics
Sherman Texas A sensation was
sprung upon the audience ot Sherman
music lovers last night when Miss
Northera Barton the youngest mem-

Conservatory or Music appeared be-
fore the public In a piano recital The
Sherman audience delights in sensa-
tions but have had none since
two years ago when the Herald
brought forth Miss Louise Love as a
candidate for the position or the
worlds most finished woman pianist
Miss Love was n pupil of Harold von
MIckwitz then director of the conser-
vatory and Miss Barton Is also a pu
oil of the same master In her recital
she showed not only the Impression
of the tamous mans delightful touch
but she also showed the broadening
influence or her present teacher Mr
