Pierce the oil magnate appeared in
court here this morning and gave bond
in the sum of 20000 to answer to
the charge of false swearing The
lease was continued until the January
term of the court Pierce immediate
ly returned to his hotel after giving
bond and will leave tonight return-
ing to St Louis

ward Morgan was shot and fatally
wounded near his home by Erie Mc
Kay a stenographer this morning
McKay suicided after shooting Mor-
gan The shooting took place near
the subway entrance after Morgan ad
mitted his identity The bullet pass
ed through the victims body

upon and the surgeons say there is a
fighting chance for his reepvery His
intestines are uninjured Further in
vestigation has revealed that another
man telephoned Morgan this morning
and the police think there was a plot

numbers for the cotton compress con
gress whici opens in this city Wed-
nesday It is estimated that two bun-
dled thousand cotton growers will be
represented at the conference Vice
President Wexler of the Central Bank
has pledged 5000000000 from the
local banks for the erection of a cen-
tral warehouse for the staling of cot-
ton The plan is to issue warehouse
receipts which will be negotiable and
the financieis behind thevmovement
predict that the plan if cariied out
will increase the value of a bale of
cotton two dollars

last night and when he attempted to
run the highwayman fired upon him

Sam Unsen a Bulgarian was found
dead in a pool of blood at his home in

Louis Smith was placed in jail in
Ensley today for hitting another man
in the head with a rock and robbing
