The city officials are to be com-

The Herald is persuaded that all of
the demagogues in Texas are not in
public office We see every day evi
dences of hypocrisy that is willing to
crawl on its knees to gain favor with
the big corporations and who would
if they had the power deliver the
state bound and gagged over to these
concerns One kind of demagoguery
is as bad as the other
The local Board of Trade should
start a movement at once looking to
having this county represented at the
Dallas Fair with a fine exhibit If
we begin in time we can make a
showing that will be worth thousands
of dollars to us in the way of attract-
ing attention this way We have the
country and we grow the products
that will attract attention all right
The local political wheel is begin-
ning to buzz some little with the elec-
tion only a few days off Study the
situation Mr Voter and remember
that motive is a very important ques-
tion in the matter of seeking elec

The progressive people of Elkhart
in this county have organized a com-
mercial league and mean to get busy
and build up that territory Elkhart
is in some of the best country on
earth and the man who goes there to
make a home and means business
will certainly make no mistake As-
a truck country Elkhart has no su-
perior in East Texas and some of
the people down there are making
good along this line Success to the
new organization
In order that Wheat Corner Patten
may make a few million dollars the
rest of the world including all of the
poor of many lands are forced to
come across and pay the extra price
demanded for bread as a result of the
wheat corner Such operations as
cornering the food supply of the
world is a crime more hurtful than
war or pestilence because there Is no
way to fight back The country cer
tainly needs a law that will forbid
and make impossible any such trans-
actions
If the planks in the democratic
platform in Texas stand for nothing
as many leaders are contending in
efforts to justify the present legisla-
ture then the candidates running on
such a platform represent nothing
and therefore are simply men running
for office subject to the vote of the
people If there is no obligation of
party Implied in the platform then
there can be no obligation on the part
of the voter to support the men who
are running on the platform and the
whole political proposition becomes
one of personal opinion If the party
is under no obligation to the people
who support its ticket then the voter
is under no obligation to the party
for the party standing for nothing is
nothing and therefore there is no
party This is sublime argument But
Texas might be better off if this was
literally true The party whip is
used mostly to boost politicians into
office and the constraint to support
any kind of a politician that has the
seal of party endorsement Is not al-
ways to the best interests of the
country Not by a long shot

THE CHRISTIAN HAL
Chief of Sinners Converted Will Be
Subject of Sermon By Dr Har-
low This Evening
Last night Dr Harlow discussed the
excuses miscalled reasons often given
by people for refusing to accept
Christ and obey His commandments
The sermon was based on the parable
in which God is likened to a man that
prepared a great feast and bade many
But when all things were declared
ready they all with one consent be-
gan to make excuse So many are
excusing themselves from the gospel
invitation And the serious part of It
is that Jesus said Not one of those
who were bidden shall taste of my
supper That > is not lone of those
invited and who excused themselves
shall be permitted to taste of the
feast which God is to sbread for His
children All are Invitek but not all
accept I
There are many todajt who seek to
excuse themselves becaiise they say
they object to excitement in a pro-
tracted meeting They c ften say they
will come into the chuich after the
meeting but they do nn t keep their
promise once in a hu ldred times
Others say they are afi lid they can
not hold out These
member that they are
unless they try Some

few still cry
out that there are hype writes in the
church Unfortunately few do get
into the various church organizations
but they are to be forlad in even
larger numbers in frater lal and other
human societies They are found in
every avenue of human activity So
long as one is in this wld he will
be more or less with h pocrites and
If he continues to reje t Christ he
will have to spend ete nity where
they all are The propt course for
these selfrighteous peop e to pursue
would be to unite with th church and
show the hypocrites how a genuine
christian ought to live
Some excuse themselve by saying
I do not feel right Yet there is not

County Attorney Brady and His As-

Austin Texas April 14 In an opin-
ion handed down today by the su-
preme court the case of the state
against John W Brady county attor-
ney of Travis county Brady lost out
This is the case on which depended
the amount of fees which Brady and
his associates would have received
from the 1623000 penalties recover-
ed from the Waters Pierce Oil com-
pany The supreme court by its opin-
ion rendered judgment in favor of the
state for fees heretofore collected by
Brady amounting to 10876
This was the base of the suit and
for which it was instituted In re
versing and rendering the case the
trust act of 1903 repealed that por
tion of the antitrust act of 1899
whereby the county attorney was al-
lowed 25 per cent of all penalties re-
covered under the act of 1899 The
amount ot this judgment is the
amount collected by Brady over and
above that allowed under the act of
1903
