Galveston jesterday in connection
with the case returning home this

of observing the anniversary of its re-
opening following a temporary re-
ceivership of three montljs due to fi-
nancial conditions in New York the
Union Trust company of this city to-
day paid out 3200000 to its deposit-
ors This sum represents twenty per-
cent of the amount due when the
bank became temporarily embarrassed
and brings the total distributed among
the depositors to sixty per cent The
remaining forty per cent will be paid
later

Farm Proved of Interest and

Messrs Jno R Hearne accompa-
nied by a visitor Mr W H Shoe-
maker of the Packer a produce
newspaper published at Kansas City
and Col Geo A Wright and a Herald
man visited the T W Smith tobacco
farm near the city yesterday after
noon and found much to interest
them Mr Shoemaker was gathering
data for his publication and took
much interest in the tobacco proposi-
tion
TJr Smith is now setting out the
plants under shade and the fieldto
bacco is growing nicely and is being
cultivated The crop promises well
In addition to his tobacco the doctor
is experimenting on other tilings Ee
has a considerable sized potato crop
corn etc and several forage crops
growing and everj thing looks tiptop
Dr Smith with Mr Hearne has don
much to develop the tobacco indus-
try and he plants the second largest
acreage to this ciop in the county

ing the questions piopounded by Lieu
tenant Governor Davidson concerning
the bill to extend the Rusk peniten-
tiary railway Attorney General Da-
vidson sustains the validity of the
proposition as it stands in the bill as
it passed the house which provided
merely for the completion of the rail-
road into Palestine instead or an ex-
tension into Palestine and one hun-
dred miles farther The attorney gen
eial says that since the house de-
cided to complete the railroad to
Palestine only it is rendered unneces-
sary for him to consider the other
questions asked by the lieutenant gov-
ernor from which it may be infened
that his opinion as to fuither exten-
sion of the road might be adverse
