TO TEXAS NEWSPAPERS
A word with the brethren of the
Texas press
Texas has been long disgraced by
the indifference of legislators to the
lack of facilities for the proper care
and treatment of the insane From
time to time we bewail this inhuman-
ity and demand additional facilities
we denounce the incarceration of
these unfortunate people in filthy
jails as unspeakable and we have in-
serted in our platform the pledge

DAILY DIET HINTS
Br DR T J ALLEN
Food Specialist
SPRING FOOD
Climate and season should
largely determine food selection
A Cuban would not tVIve on
an Eskimos diet Our summers
and winters diet should differ
materially More fresh frul t
should be eaten in spring and
summer The Intake of starch
should be reduced as the spring
opens and meat if used at ail
should be eaten sparingly Let-
tuce uncooked cabbage celery
and tomatoes valued in the or-
der named can often be eaten
alone with advantage when
there Is little appetite for heavy
food especially by the nervous
woman and the school girl
Cucumbers uncooked and with-
out vinegar may also be eaten
as a spring food medicine The
best time to eat these Is In the
morning when a heavy meal-
y should never be eaten In the
spring Lemon juice may be
substituted for vinegar and olive
oil is not specially Incompatible
with green vegetables
that facilities shall be provided for
the accommodation of these unfor-
tunates But Insane patients languish
in the jails nevertheless
To the point
There is at this moment imprison-
ed in the Harris county jail because
of insanity the widow of a former
treasurer of the Texas Press Associa-
tion Efforts to obtain room for her
in the state institutions at Austin
San Antonio or Terrell have failed
because these institutions are so
crowded that no more patients can
be received
This woman is indigent and unable
to obtain accommodations in a pri-
vate sanitarium So she languishes
in prison where murderers and
thieves are confined denied the com-
forts and refinement of life to which
she was accustomed when her hus-
band conduced one of the very best
newspapers in this state And she
must continue to languish in her cell
during the sweltering heat of a Tex-
as summer unless something is done
to mitigate the hardships to which
she is subjected
The Post hopes and believes that
this pitiful case will bring home to
every newspaper of this state the
enormity of the brutal official indif-
ference which inflicts upon the gen-
erous and enlightened people of Tex-
as this foul disgrace and inspire to
thunder against the stupidity dema-
gogy brutality or indifference that is
responsible for it until the people de-
mand in the name of civilzation that
those who serve them in official sta-
tion shall eradicate this dark blot
from the states escutcheon
The Post has revealed the identity
of this unfortunate woman to the
president of the Texas Press Associ-
ation for such action as he may think
necessary in the way of obtaining ac
ominodattonsand treatment for her
onaintfnfirTreirBeaItn i refol rbr until
the state can do its duty and receive
her into one of its institutions
Houston Post
Following the nice big rain old
corn should get up and make its best
As is usual in East Texas the rain
came just at the right time
The new pure food state law is
now in effect and should be enforced
Too much care cannot be exercised
in the handling and preparing of food-
stuffs
Mrs Howard Gould is suing for di-
vorce on the ground of nonsuppoit
and testified that she spent only 10
000 a year for her dresses Its a
shame and her husband well able to
clothe her nicely
The habit of trading votes between
members of congress is responsible
for much of the extravagance of the
government Ill vote for you if
youll vote for me gets many a meas-
ure through congress that would fail
of its own importance or value
Hogs are selling at S00 per 100
pounds on the Chicago market The
man who has hogs to sell is in on a
pretty good trust of his own There
are all kinds of ways to make money
these days The man who raises
chjckens who can locate the hen
eggs who can churn his milk into
butter or who has hogs or beeves to
sell can get fancy prices all the time
The Tyler CourierTimes says It
was announced recently by a minis-
ter that on the following Sunday ho
would preach on Hell and Who
Would Be There Before Sunday
came he had received letters from
several lawyers two mei chants and
one doctor three women and the jus
tice of the peace thicatening to sue
him for slander if he mentioned any
names That equals the announce-
ment by a minister at a forenoon
Sunday service that the evening ser-
vice would be especially interesting
as the topic would be Hell and that
the choir would sing Tell Father Ill

Tag Contest
Do the people of Palestine want
band concerts during the summer
Wo cant expect them free and if
every one helps just a little it saves
some one from having to pay all In
this case heretofore the band itself
has paid The tag contest which is
now on is not being supported as it
ought to be If every girl or young
lady would get to work and every-
one pay his part there would be no
trouble It is up to Palestine If
the band cannot ho supported the
leader will have to be turned loose
and the band will be disbanded A
town of this size needs a band Fri-
day night will decide the issue If
we want concerts lots get tags and
work a few hours for them Those
now in the contest are urged to re-
port each day by noon at least the
amount on hand so standing can be
shown The standing up to noon to-
day shows that Miss Culver has
forged ahead Alias Crocker being

pants cannot be shown as they fail
