FOR THE HOLIDAYS
FIRST CONSIGNMENT OF CHRIST-
MAS TREES HAS REACHED THE
BIG CITY DECORATIONS COME
HIGHER THIS YEAR
Herald Special
New York Dec 9 The customary
pine forest which never falls to ap-
pear at this season of the year sprung
up in the vicinity of AVall street to-
day with the arrival of the first large
consignment of Christmas trees for
the metropolis It takes from 150 to
175 car loads of trees each year to
supply Father Knickerbockers chil-
dren at Christmas Most of them
this year are Canadian trees but
many of the darker and more thickly
follaged Norway spruces are to be
seen The trees are of all sizes Some
are just large enough to place upon a
table The general run are about ten
feet1 high and the longest nearly forty
feet The latter are used chiefly for
church displays
The price of the trees this year
averages a trifle highert than last
t
year T he reason for this is that the
Christmas tree supply is not as pro-
lific as it once was Eveiy year the
searcher for this annual luxury must
venture further and further into the
northern wilds further from civiliza-
tion and further from the railroads
Allied with the Christmas tree busi-
ness Is the trade in holly laurel and
raisteltoe These important features
of Christmas season decorations come
principally from Virginia Maryland
and North and South Carolina Capa
Cod in Massachusetts also furnishes
a considerable quantity of these
greens for the New York market
