FAKE RABBIS AND THE GETT
Many regularly ordained rabbis men
of erudition and unblemished charac-
ter hold the title Reverend in espe-
cial destestation The reason is that
every petty Mohel Chazan Shochel
Shammos or any other Jew with a
smattering of Hebrew prefixes the
Rev to his name at will This class
labor under the impression that by the
help of the title they can cut as wide
a swath in the estimation of their un-
pretending coreligionists as in the opin-
ion of the Goyim to whom the title
really signifies a dignity of which this
gentry have no conception and to
which they can never hope to aspire
These selfstyled reverends these
pseudo rabbis on the strength of the
title and a stovepipe have in many
instances assumed the functions of a
regularly ordained clergyman and mar-
ried couples without so much as receiv-
ing permission from the Board of
Health By their action in many states
they have Invalidated the claims of
offspring of these unions as distant rel-
atives can step in and claim the es-
tate of husband and father on the
ground that the marriage was celebrat-
ed by an unauthorized party
In the caso of divorce they have be-
come a positive menace fo Judaism
These fakirs have caused untold mis-
ery by aiding and abetting unscrupu-
lous men in handing their wives a bill
of divorcement a Gett on the slight-
est provocation Uiub placing both par-
ties in a state of transgression under
our law
Every wellinformed Jew knows that
the timehonored Gett is very hard
to obtain No conscientious rabbi will
undertake to separate a couple no mat
tor how mismated without an almost
endless amount of redtape investi-
gation and ceremony
But these socalled reverends have
performed this difficult service on any
pretext where a feo was in sight In
tho congested quarters where Jews
most do congregate lias this practice
among them become so prolific a
source of income that tbey haveactual
ly become riqtfthcrefrom
I3ut fortunately the Slate of New
York has put a stop to it Mismated
couples must now wait for the courts
4o pass on their case and receive a leg-
al divorce before applying for
a religious Bepnratlon Parties not
complying with these requirements
have In store a nice jail sentence not
alone for themselves but for the rev-
erend who Is willing to give a Gett
Rabbis regularly ordained and in
good standing know the laws of the
land as well as those of their religion
and will transgress neither nor allow
the ancient Gett to bo invoked ex-
cept under the most pressing need
May > other states speedllyvfollowtho

glories in the undeserved Rev
GOOD KING GEORGE
To those who sincerely mourned tho
death of King Edward Friend of tho
Jews comes the welcome tidings that
the son seems inclined to follow in tho
footsteps of his illustrious father A
happy token of this is that King George
has graciously conferred baronetcies
of the United Kingdom upon three
Jews Alfred Mond Adolph Tuck and
Carl Meyer The fortunate gentlemen
are not merely knighted but the bar-
onetcy and title are hereditary trans-
mitted from the father to son Knight-
hood on the other hand carries with it
also the Sir but the right to the title
dies with the one on whom it was orig-
inally conferred As the king saw fit
to distinguish these three Jewish fam-
ilies on his August birthday we earn-
estly join in sincere wishes for many
happy returns of tho day
A REMEDY
Here is a translation of a speech de-
livered by General JJiimbadze before
the Union of the Russian People
Dear to my heart colleagues You
know how badly I wanted to clear Yal-
ta of the Jews but was prevented My
advice to you is that you yourself get
rid of the Jews Rent them no dwell-
ings no business places
It a Jew offers you one thousand
rubles rent do not take it Better rent
it to a Russian even for 50 rubles vunly
thus can you conquer the Jews
Now if the Jewish millionaires would
take this selfsame advice and turn tho
tables on the Russian Government by
lending money to other countries at
onehalf the rate offered bj the Czar
the Jewish situation need not become
so critical nor the suffclings of these
innocent martyrs so long drawn out
More men of the Brodsky type would
soon solve the Russian Jewish problem
as it is reported of him
Tho famous Jewish millionaire and
philanthropist L Brodsky of Kieff is
liquidating his business interests pre-
paratory to leaving Russia forever
Brodsky possesses about thirty million
rubles He controls about twenty sug-
ar refineries and employs thousands of
Jewish workingmen The recent expul-
sions affected tho millionaire so much
that ho decided to leave Russia entire
V
Now if a few more millionaires in
and out of Russia would become simi-
larly affected It would ultimately help
the Jows moro than tho intervention of
all tho governments on earth Russia
cant get alongonoweekwithout Jew
lsh money and it is a shamo that tniB
weapon hnB not been used to bring tho
country to its senses
THE JEWISH HERALD
POLITICS AND THE RUSSIAN SITU
TION
That the promises of common poli-
ticians nro not worth much has be-
come almost axiomatic but that we
should look to the President of the Unit-
ed States as a fitting exception to this
lulo wns not far from wrong on our
part either Unfortunately we are find-
ing out that he is proving hiniBelf no
better In keeping a promise than tho
petty wardheeler tho verltublo time-
server
When running for his high office he
was most profuse In promises to the
Jows whose vote he needed saying that
he would help all In his power the
measures they wished passed Since his
election however his attitude has been
anything but favorable to the Jews
Many instances could be cited against
him Witness the last act in the farce
being enacted in getting the United
States Government to intercede on be-
half of the hapless Jews of Russia
Representative William Hughes of
tho Sixth Congressional District sent
the following telegram to President
Taft
The Jewish constituents of my dis-
trict through the medium of the Inde-
pendent Order Free Sons of Joseph
desire me to call your attention to the
atrocities which have occuired in Rus-
sia affecting the Jewish population an
account of which was partly detailed in
the newspapers ot July and respectful-
ly request that you as President of the
U S on behalf ot the Jewish citizens
of this country enter a protest to the
Russian government in the name of
humanity against the continuance ot
the honible conditions prevalent
WILLIAM HUGHES
Now mark well the character of the
protest that tho above received in
the name of humanity we infer He
replies as follows through his Secre-
tary of State
Any unjust or harsh treatment of
one people due to deeprooted religious
or racial prejudice is deeply deplored
in whatever country it may exist and
the views of the present administration
in this regard are well known to for-
eign governments
This government is observing the
present situation in Russia with sympa-
thetic interest in tho hope of the de-
velopment of a broader spirit of tolera-
tion towards the Jews with moderation
and the eventual repeal of unduly re-
strictive laws
If this reply isnt the limit what is
The worm knows of old how suscept-
ible of development of a spiritual tol
eraton the Russian Bear has always
been and it is enough to draw tears
to think of the patience and sympa-
thetic interest that our rotund Presi-
dent will be called on to exercise till
this desirable quality Is fully doveloped
in Russia so that it will materially help
the Jews
O for another Roosevelt Another
Secretary Hay
Right on the heels of President
Tafts hope comes tho report of Geo
Post Wheeler to the State Department
at Washington that ho was informed
that while many of tho Jews had left
the city not all of them md done so-
under pohce compulsion On the con-
trary a number had applied for and
ii received tUe < u8Ual < pollcQ < aBSiBtance in
leaving
Imagine an American citizen apply
ing for and receiving tho usual police
assistance in leaving
Imagine also a man of Roosevelts
typo being satisfied with a representa-
tive to a foreign court who would daro
send in a report that he had been In-
formed presumably by the Russian
brutes themselves who are using ev-
ery means in their power to suppress
any news of the truly horrible situa-
tion reacmng I he outside world
Tho Russian government has even
gone so far as to demand of the direc-
tors of the Gallery at the Glass Palace
of Munich to remove immediately a
sensational painting depicting the hor
lors of the pogroms of 1905 It Is by
tho Polish artist Fabianski and shows
in tho most graphic manner a pogrom
scene in Kieff in which a row of muti-
lated bodies before the Womens Hos-
pital are mocked by the Czars Mani-
festo of religious liberty fluttering di-
rectly above them
The painting is entitled In the
Realm of the Czar German artists
rose up and protested against the de-
mand but the authorities acceded to it
So one can easily draw his conclusions
that Mr Wheeler at St Petersburg
must have been informed along the
lines of the above policy to the world
known as little as possible of what oc-
curred In the Realm of the Czar
That the present administration is
far from friendly to the Jews is fur-
ther evidenced by the very recent ac-
tion of the Department of Labor and
Commerce in deporting thirtyfour
Jewish immigrants on their arrival at
Galveston The Department claims the
new arrivals came at the solicitation of
societies who held out promises of em-
ployment which is a direct violation
of the law against Contract Labor
That this is unjust can easily be dem-
onstrated as these poor refugees were
compelled to leave by the home gov-
ernment and not induced to do so by
employment agencies operated in this
country That the Jews here uso ev-
ery means in their power to provide
employment for these unfortunates is
well known but overlooked by the De-
partment shich is bent on excluding
these fleeing creatures
AN UNIMPORTANT NEWS ITEM
By Oscar LeonardJ
It must have looked important to
the editor of tho daily newspapei
this little item He told the reporter
to give it just a half doznn lines That
is all the reporter or rewrite man
used in telling it But ho told a story
No glaring headlines to the story No
pictures Not even names It was all
so unimportant The human interest
side made its appeal and lir > su
lines went Into tho paper Many of
the thousands of readers proiably did
not even see the Item Some saw it
and probably paid very little attention
What was there to it
A Jewish baby taken from its moth-
er and exiled from Moscow There
Is really no uso in occupying so much
space about a little story of this sort
The mother had come to be a nurse in
Moscow Sho had brought her flvo
yearold son with her For her per-
mission had been obtained to live in
Moscow Hor services wpro needed so
thgy brought her from tho Palo or
Settlement Sho thought her child
had a right to stay with hor But tho
authorities thought Indifferently
Jows are dangerous Thoy must not
stay in an important Russlnn city
like Moscow So tho flvoyearold
child must too leave He must go
back to the Pale of Settlement The
law must take Its course It must
be obeyed to tho letter
Why should such a story occupy
more than six lines an nn uptodate
American newspaper Why should
Americans be made to read about
such happenings Why should a
daily paper give moro of its valuable
spaco to such a story Why distress
the American readers Why distract
from theonjoymentltlley lllave read-
ing baseball news Space There are
plenty of things to fill space Are
thero not enough millionaires who
marry and divorce Are there not
enough nctresses whose private lives
must be laid bare for American read-
ers Why should the space in news-
papers be given over to the story nf
a little Jew boy who had been tak-
en from his mother way over in Rus-
sia just because he happens to be a
Jew
Who suggested the unity of the hu-
man race Oh yes that is good
enough subject for a sermon on Sun-
days Makes fine phrase in the church
from the pulpit on the Sabbath But
a newspaper is issued every day It
is a workday affair Wty editoralize
about such things Brotherhood of
man But where does the fiveyearold
Jew kid come in Why should peo-
ple bother about him Who told him
to be born a Jew What right has any-
one to bo a Jew in a Christian world
Christ himself Oh that is a differ3t
story entliely It has been so long
since He lived that His socalled fol-
lowers have forgotten He was a Jew
Thoy have even forgotten what he
taught They call themselves Chris-
tians and believe He could come and
dwell with them again Aye what if
He camo disguised as a little Jewish
boy came to Russia where they know
very little about Him and His teach-
ings He could not live in Moscow nor
in St Petersburg Jews are danger
pus Out with you little Jew You
arc not wanted hero
Oh but that is Russia just Russia
where they are not civilized It would
never happen in America In Am-
erica the newspapers would only tell
about it in six lines without a word
of comment It would all be written
in that inpersonal American newspa-
per fashion Heart and soul and
brain would be missing There is
nothing funny about it so why should
tho best writer in the office lose his
time with It Tell the cub to re-
write it It 1b only a Jew story Not
much to It The mother poor Else
why should she be a nurse A poor
mother a little boy both Jows both
poor Six lines is enough We are not
living In a Jewish world so why
should there be Jows Get off tho
earth Tho sooner tho better Hebrew
