What would you do if you had
to throw a party every night
lor thousand* of tesn-ager*?
Hit* bodyguards? Rant a
tommy gun? Flea the oountry?
Tommy Walker, who has Just
this problem as entertainment
director at Disneyland, faces
up to It manfully. In fact, he
even wages a little psychologi-
cal war of his own to improve
teen-age musical taste.
"We’ve done a kH of re-
search, ” says Walker, 43, and
a father of three daughters,
sged 14, 12, and 1L “We've
studied the market. We-ve
studied the audience reaction.
We have more dancing here
than anywhere in the United
States.’’
The result of the study:
•’We spread our entertain-
ment groups throughout the
park instead of having them
all In one dance area. People
like variety, they want to be on
the move.”
And thla is precisely where

In, Walker explains.
As the youngsters
through the park, they hear a
rode n’ roll bend here, a wait*
orchestra there, a Ja»t combo
somewhere else.
The teen-agers pause to
listen. Poof! Subversion.
Suddenly the youngster* dis-
cover they’re dancing smoothly
to Wayne Xing or Tex Bench*
and loving it.
"In an attempt t* encourage
young kids to appe*dat# fine
music, w* have imported big
name bands.” Walker says-

Then on Sept. 34-25, the
sixth annual Dixieland at Dis-

ed.
But the special delight of the
teen-aged act are the Hum-
dingers—shows featuring name
talent from the world of rock

nights from June 39-Sept. ?.
Walker describes the Hum-
dingers a* "wholesome, but
fun-type things.” He observes
