took the time to reflect
on the advancements
during the 1960 year.
As the last newspaper
published in 1960, it ex-
tended a sincere farewell
to the retiring Sheriff
Clark Royal,
As 1960 drew to a
close, the beginning of
the “Soaring Sixties”
ended. The decade was
granted to be the best,
soaring high over past
developments and pro-
gresses, The December
30, 1960 Meridian Tri-
bune showed a light on
a few of the ways Me-
ridian as well as Bosque
County soared above
and beyond during the
year of 1960, Re-open-
ing the local hospital
was the number one
factor in getting Bosque
County off of its’ feet.
The flower shops re-
opening combined with
the new school gymna-
sium, Meridian Hard-
ware’s new location and
G,B, Arnold’s business
site at the circle truly
strengthened the com-
munity and economy.
The slumping 978 Me-
ridian population in
June 1960 leaped to 993
in December 1960, with
approximately 1,700
residents living outside
of the city limits. The
Riding Club, the Me-
and the Boy Scouts all
worked tediously on var-
ious projects throughout
the years. Voters partic-
ipation was on high in
1960 with the presiden-
tial elections H,W, Al-
len succeeding retiring
Judge R,B, Cross and
A,0, Carr succeeding
retiring Sheriff Clark
Royal, Meridian High

football had a tremen-
dous
season, winning
seven out of the ten
games. Of course, par-
ties, weddings, true Tex-
as weather, community
events and unfortunate-
ly deaths played an im-
portant part in making
1960 the year it was.
With the new year
rolling in, changes were
expected, Bosque Coun-
ty’s most drastic change
at the end of 1960 was
the retirement of Sher-
iff Clark Royal, Clark
retired on December 31,
1960 after 10 years of
service. Royal conducted
business with honesty,
integrity and true pas-
der shepherd, Shorty, at
his side, Royal did not
feel the need to carry a
gun on his hip. In fact,
on November 23, 1960,
which just so happened
to be Royal’s 67th birth-
day, he transported four
convicts to the peniten-
tiary in Huntsville, Roy-
al wore no pistol and the
convicts wore no hand-
cuffs, yet Royal felt safe
as Shorty made the trip
with them. Royal had a
right to trust in Shorty
as he had proved his
loyalty and crime-fight-
ing abilities in past ex-
periences, The retiring
sheriff was dedicated to
his job; in fact, his home
was also his office. For
the first seven and a half
years as sheriff, Royal
and his wife, Jewel, lived
in the jail. His wife ac-
tually helped out with
fighting crime by work-
ing the radio and even
had her share of catch-
ing crooks. Royal took
pride in the fact that of
the 68 convicts he had
taken to the penitentia-
ry during his career, only
eight were from Bosque
County, Royal loved
Bosque County and the
feeling seemed to be re-
ciprocated, At the news
of Royal retiring, vot-
ers in the 1960 election
elected Royal as consta-
stroyed the home of
