Echoes From Windthorst

High school commencement
exercises were held last Sun-
day evening for the 1969 Wind-
thorst seniors. The class vale-
dictorian was Betty Schroeder
and salutatorian was Jane Wolf.
The other graduates were Kenny
Berend, Larry Berend, Melvin
Berend, Sara Brenneis, Emily
Conrady, Annette Koetter.Doug
Lindeman, Linda Lindeman,
Sharon Lindeman, Donnie Os-
termann, Margaret Ostermann,
Teresa Ostermann, Norbert
Roewe, Steve Schlumpf, David
Schreiber, Pat Schreiber, Dan-
ny B. Schroeder, Elaine Sch-
roeder, Mary Schroeder, Mary
Catherine Zihlman and Randy
Zihlman.
Special guest speaker for the
exercises was a 1962 graduate
of WHS, James Poirot of Lub-
bock, who presented a very
timely and informative address
for the seniors. He spoke of
the advantages of a small, rural
education and the disadvantages
of the school consolidation is-
sue, citing more involvement
and better participation for all
students in all school activi-
ties as some of the good points
a small school can offer. Being
a recent high school and col-
lege student himself, Poirot
offered some wise and useful
advice for the students who
plan to attend college or fur-
ther their education in other
ways. He holds a Master’s De-
gree in mathematics from Tex-
as Tech and will receive his
Doctor’s Degree in August. He’s
married to the former Peggy
Schroeder and his parents are
Mr. and Mrs. Edmund Poirot
of Scotland.
The twenty-three graduated
seniors left on their class trip
Tuesday morning at 5 a.m. for
the scenic state of Colorado.
They plan to do a lot of sight-
seeing including the Cave of
the Winds, Seven Falls, Royal
Gorge, the Colorado State Pris-
on and the Air Force Academy
at Colorado Springs. They ex-
pect to return sometime Satur-
day evening, May 24. Joe Sch-
roeder and Supt. Rufus Moore
will drive the bus and the chap-
erones are George Beaman,
class sponsor, Mmes. Henry
Ostermann, Ed Conrady and
Andy Roewe. Mrs. Joe Schroe-
der also accompanied the group.
The unbeaten Windthorst
Men’s baseball team are still
number one in the Stan Musial
League with two more victories
to their credit. Last Wednesday
they shut out the Wichita Falls’
Red Sox, 9-0, and last Sunday
afternoon they topped Vernon,
6-1, The team has a standing
of six wins and no defeats.
This Wednesday evening the
local team plays Aitus here.
The Kid Baseball season op-
ened Monday evening with J&L
playing Hopkins. Thursday, May
22, at 7 p.m. Grady Jones No.
1 vs. Brackeens and at 9 p.m.
Grady Jones No. 4 vs. J&L
here.
The last Parent-Teachers-
Group meeting of the school
year was held last Monday,
May 12. Election of officers
for the school year 1969-70
was held. Robert Steinberger
was re-elected as president,
Mrs. Paul Smith was chosen
as vice-president, Mrs. Henry
Munchrath was re-elected to
hold her position as secretary
and Dave Meurer was elected
to the treasurer’s office. A
special treat was afforded the
members when homemakLng
classes I and II presented a
style show with the students
modeling some of the cloth-
ing they have sewed during
the year. Miss Jean Boychuk
taught the girls. The third and
fourth grades served refresh-
ments.
Mr. and Mrs. Jerome Berend
are announcing the arrival of
a daughter, Mary Ann, born on
April 25 and weighing 9 pounds
plus. She was welcomed home
by five thrilled brothers.
Mrs. Sandra Brewer is cur-
rently in Hawaii visiting her
husband, Lt. Gary Brewer,
while he is on RR leave from
Vietnam. She arrived there last
Friday night and plans to fly
home this Thursday. Their one-
year-old son, Bryan, is at home
with his grandparents, the Rob-
ert Wolfs.
Mr. and Mrs. Ed Kajs of
Crowell spent several days here
last week with her parents, Mr.
and Mrs. Robert Wolf. Ed took
part in the Armed Forces Day
Parade in Wichita Falls last
Saturday with his National
Guard unit.
Mrs. Judy VandorBroek and
daughter, Linda, of Wichita
Falls spent Sunday in the home
of the Don Esslers. Her hus-
band, Don, is stationed with the
Air Force in Thailand.
Mr. and Mrs. John Frazier
are the proud parents of a son
who arrived Friday, May 16.
He weighed about eight pounds.
The maternal grandparents are
Mr. and Mrs. George Humpert
with whom the Fraziers are
currently living but they plan
to move to Wichita Falls In
several weeks.
Visiting his parents, the
Humperts, over the weekend
w„s their youngest son, Lt.
Royce Humpert, who is sta-
tioned at Fort Hood, El Paso,
but will go to Vietnam in Aug-
ust.
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Rodgers
are visiting here with her folks,
the Ben Schneiders, while he
is on leave from an Air Force
Base in Tucson, Ariz. They
will be here until May 30.
Eddie Zihlman, Jr. was home
last weekend from the Univer-
sity of Texas to be present
for the graduation of his sis-
ter, Mary Catherine.
Music Pupils
To Give Recital
At Holliday
Piano, organ and voice pu-
pils of Mrs. Fern McAllister’s
Music Studio will be presented
in a formal recital Sunday,
May 25, at 3 p.m. in the au-
ditorium of the First Baptist
Church in Holliday.
Students who will participate
in the musical program are

my Caldwell, Catherine and Lee

Cub Scouts
Make Trip
Through Jail
Cub Scouts of Dens 4 and 3
were treated by their respec-
tive den mothers, Mrs. How-
ard Barton and Mrs. Leo Har-
relson, to a tour of the Archer
County jail last week. They
were accompanied by Mrs. John
Bell, assistant mother of Den
4. Mrs. Melvin Brown, wife
of the deputy sheriff, conducted
the tour.
Cubs taking the educational
trip included David Barton,
Greg Beall, Stephen Turner,
Mike Aulds, Todd Coleman and
James Champion of Den 4 and
Donald Hill, Mark Harrelson,
Clifton Russell, Doug Stanford
ind Carlton Schlomacbof Den3.
The groups will have a weiner
roast this week.
