Soil Stewardship Week May 7-14
Is Set By Conservation Service
The week of May 7th through
May 14th has been designated
as “Soil Stewardship Week”
sponsored by the National As-
sociation of Soil Conservation
Districts and national church or-
ganiations. Soil Stewardship
Week will again emphasize the
kinship between a man’s spirit- i
ual belief and the soil resources
on which his life depends.
To the man who would be a
responsible steward of his soil, j
good intentions are not enough.
The intentions must be followed
by action. The vision must be
translated into accomplishment.
Soil stewardship becomes a
fruitful, living reality only as
it takes place on the landscape.
The handiwork of the steward
becomes apparent in the pro-
tected acres that are in his
charge. In lush rangeland, in
vigorous crops and in well-tend-
ed terrace systems with grass-
matted waterways. Equally im-
portant is the steward's disposi-
tion of his land — his decision
to use each field and acre with-
in its capability as provided by
Nature, and thereby to avoid
the weakened production and
lasting damage which are the
consequences of ill use.
In his accomplishment and
realization of work well done on
the land, the steward finds real
reward because he knows, as
others may see. that he has
made a responsible contribution
to the future.
We should all remember that
the Bible repeatedly emphasizes
the importance of this gift of j
soil. It cautions man against the
abuse and neglect of the soil.
We should also remember that
the land of Palestine referred
to in Biblical times as the land j
of “milk and honey” became a
sterile desert This w as all due j
to neglect of the soil.
The Supervisors of the Little
Wichita Soil Conservation Dis-
trict would like to suggest that
there is no time like the present
to start a conservation program
on your land.
