-SNAPPY ON THE OUTSIDE,
DEADLY ON THE INSIDE"
“Snappy on the outside, deadly
on the inside!"
Col. E. B. Tiley of Houston,
president of the Texas Safety As-
sociation, and services advisor for
the Gulf Oil Corporation today
used this parody of the popular
song. “Laughing on the Outside,
Crying on the Inside,” to describe
the condition of many of the au-
tomobiles now being driven on
Texas streets and highways.
Col. Tilley spoke in connection
with the state-wide vehicle main-
tenance program all official and
■on-offical groups are conducting
in Texas throughout May. This
program is part of the annual
maintenance program of the Texas
Department of Public Safety and
the National Safety Council
“Many car owners who keep
their vehicles well washed and
painted are not so particular
about keeping them in safe
operating condition,” he said.
He pointed out that it would
make better sense to spend less
time shining up the fenders and
more time investigating the con-
dition of brakes, tires, headlights
and other mechanical parts.
“You can lose a little prestige
if your car is a bit dingy,” he said,
“but you can lose your life if your

car is mechanically unsafe.
“I certaindy don’t want to dis-
courage automobile owners from
keeping their cars spick and span,”
Col. Tilley said. “On the contrary,
I think concern for the appearance
of the vehicle speaks well for the
owner. But I do want to impress
upon them the importance of plac-
ing first things first, and safety
should have priority on every
driver's list.”
Col. Tiiiey urged all motorists
to take their cars in for a safety
check this month while the special
May vehicle maintenance program
is in progress. He said, “the im-
portant points to check are head-
lights, rear and stop lights, brakes,
tires, steering mechanism, wind-
shield wipers, muffler and exhause
system, window glass, horn, and
rear-view mirror.
Let’s have a hundred per cent
co-operation,’’ he said. “Checking
our cars is certainly a simple way
to check accidents!”
Mr. and Mrs. Douglas Wilson
were guests of their son, Alfred,
at a Mother-Father Day dinner
given Sunday at the Kappa Alpha
Fraternity House of North Texas
State College at Denton.
Alfred, to take his bachelor’s
degree from NTSC in June, was
one of only three seniors of the en-
tire college to receive a bid into
the National Honorary Fraternity
of that school. Requisitions for
that honor include high scholastic
standing and outstanding charac-
ter and leadership. Alfred was
recognized at the dinner for that
achievement.
