Rain totaling over five
inches fell in the West area on
already rain-soaked lands be-
ginning last Friday and end-
ing Sunday causing high wa-
ter accumulations and flood-
ing in certain parts of the
area.
These two particular pic-
tures show flood waters from
the Aquilla Creek at the point
where FM 2114 Wej>t crosses
over the creek. These pictures
were taken at approximately
10 a.m. Saturday. Several
Central Texas cities includ-
ing: Clifton, Meridian, Valley
Mills and Iredell reported
high water damage from last
week's rains.
Last week's heavy rains,
coupled with an already wet
month have made it one of the
wettest December's on rec-
ord.
Christmas tradition...
The tradition of sitting on Santa's lap and telling him what your want himto bring you for Christmas was con-

Claus, to her Christmas wishes. The Yuletide pair visited in West, courtesy the West Chamber of Commerce,

Russell Devorsky announces county commissioner candidacy
Russell Devorsky, candidate for
McLennan County Commissioner
in Precinct 3.
Russell L. Devorsky, a 30-ycar-
old Be 11 mead resident and eight-year
veteran of the Bcllmcad City Coun-
cil, has filed as a candidate for the
McLennan County Commissioner
Precinct 3 position in the Democratic
Primary.
Devorsky, who publicly an-
nounced his decision to enter the
Precinct 3 county commissioner race
on Dec. 19, has served on the Bcll-
mcad City Council since 1984 and
served as mayor for seven months in
1987. He placed third in the Demo-
cratic Primary for McLennan County
Treasurer in 1990 carrying the east-
ern part of the county.
The commissioner candidate said
jail prisoners, roads, county services
and economic development top his
agenda.
He favors other options to build-
ing more jail space to reduce over-
crowding in the McLennan County
Jail. One option, he discussed, is
having a work-crew program for
first-time offenders. The crews could
clean parks or provide other unskilled
labor. He added that a drawback to
this would be the county having to as-
sume the liability.
He, however, does not favor early
release of jail prisoners to ease over-
crowding.
Devorsky favors the establishing
of a citizen advisory committee to
help upgrade rural county roads. He
suggests the members would investi-
gate the types of surfaces the roads
need and then would set up a time-
table for upgrading projects.
He explained theCity of Bellmead
has upgraded roads by setting aside
money each year for a particular proj-
ect. "It's a creative way of building a
road."
Devorsky also discussed present-
ing to voters and industry an issue
concerning increasing economic de-
velopment in the county. Bond issues
and property tax abatements to help
businesses are two items he supports.
Making county services such as is-
suing birth certificates, marriage li-
censes and similar documents avail-
able in county justices of the peace
offices is another item on his agenda.
This would save the public a trip to
the courthouse, he said.
He is a member of: the Bellmead
Chamber of Commerce, Knights of
Columbus, St Joseph's Catholic
Church, Heart of Texas Council of
Governments, Waco Area Mass
Transportation Committee, the Texas
Municipal League, Democratic Ex-
ecutive Committee and Democratic
Precinct 54 chairman.
He is a 1979 La Vega High School
graduate and is currently enrolled in
the pre-law program at McLennan
Community College.
