KCs, Blue Angels, and Fire Depl. Still Unbeaten
There are only three teams from a field of 19 in the West
summer ball program that have not felt defeat since getting the
season started on May 25. The Aderhold Blue Angels (4-0) in jr.
girls’ softball; the Knights of Columbus (4-0) in the freshman boys'
league; and the West Fire Dept. PeeWees (4-0) are rolling
smoothly. Other teams have lost only once and are challenging the
leaders.
For some, the first win hasn't come their way yet, but those
teams are not giving up so early in the contests for championship
honors. Below is the summary of second week action involving the
teams sponsored by the West League Booster Club:
The KCs, coached by Jimmy Doherty. Inky Uptmore, and Mike
Gassaway, had to play three games due to a rain out in Abbott on
June 1. the KCs won the game 10-6 last Wednesday behind the
pitching of Jeff Tobola. Floyd Wolf had 4 rbi's in an 8-0 victory
over Gerik Appliances! 1-3) as he went 3-for-3 and Pat Sykora got
the shut out on a three hitter.'Last Friday the previously
undefeated Kiwanis Cats, now 4-1 were blanked by the powerful
KCs 10-0 with Pat pitching again, and knocking a home run too.
Kiwanis earlier had whipped V.F.W. 9-3 with hurler Richard Nors
clobbering a homer. Abbott(3-2) stunned Tours Rangers(4-1) 17-8,
but revenge was gotten Friday night as the Rangers bombed
Gholson (0-5) 27-3 highlighted by a grandslam by Joey Dulock, the
pitching of Daniel Uptmor, and the 18 runs scored in the 6th frame.
The win kept Tours in a second place tie with Kiwanis at 4-1.
Gholson lost to Abbott also on Monday 14-4. Gerik Appliances
handed winless V.F.W.(0-4) the same 14-4 setback as G.A. got its
first win Friday. Steve Neely homered while Mike Jones fired a
three hitter and tripled.
Aderhold Blue Angels really put it on the young, but scrappy
Maler’s Texaco team (0-4) by a 23-0 margin as Boortz fired a
one-hit shutout. Ondrej had three hits for the winners, who
breezed by Kozelski Motors(2-2) the next night 29-10. Ondrej had
four hits, including a round tripper. Otto was winning pitcher for
managers Cappy Payne and Randy Barton. The closest game ABA
has had to date is a 10-2 win over Kozelski. Kozelski was
triumphant against Malers 21-7.
In senior girls’ softball the Kotch Funeral Home and Flour Mill
are tied for first with 3-1 records while D.Q- is 0-4. Kotch got by
Flour Mill 15-10 and D.Q. 20-9 while Flour Mill slipped by D.Q.
16-7 in a game that was played in the rain last Tuesday, but went
the full 1 Vi hour time limit. Melisa Janek and Becky Barton had a
good night for WFM with three hits each. Phillips had a homer in
one of the Kotch wins.
Dave Ferguson's Fire Dept. PeeWees are 4-0 now after taking
Gerik Exxon (2-3) by a 9-2 count. GE also lost a heartbreaker to
Abbott (2-2) 15-14 and Abbott won over the Tours PeeWees,
making Tours 0-3.
In the Brazos Valley League there is still one unbeaten team in
the Hillsboro Tucker Lumber(5-0), but the West Lorch Mfg. Team
(4-1) and Friendship Cafe team(3-2) have high hopes of taking the
National Division title. Hillsboro Tucker took advantage of some
Lorch errors here last week to come out on top of a battle of the
unbeatens, 9-7 with Doug Snokhous going all the way for the locals
with Ricky Wolf getting a pair of hits and two runs batted in. The
same evening in Hillsboro, the F.C. club smacked Hillsboro
Holmes 10-4 with Randy Kocian picking up the victory on the
mound. Then on Thursday at Trojan Field the Friendship boys
picked up their third straight win by scoring five runs in the bottom
of the six to over come Hillsboro Pizza Hut 10-8, again with Kocian
the winning hurler. Larry Ferrero had three hits. Raymond Gene
Schroeder was pitching his Lorch teammates to a close 5-3 victory
at Tours meanwhile to keep both West teams in strong contention.
Lorch won the American League title last year. Friendship has to
play Itasca(there) on Monday before the Lorch and F.C. teams face
each other here at 7:30 p.m. Thursday.
Winners See Rangers Win 4-3
Debbie Marek and Dave Selman, players of the Maler’s Texaco
and Kiwanis Cats, were top sales persons when the clubs sold U.S.
Bond tickets as a fund-raising project. They each had three tickets
to the Texas Rangers vs. Chicago White Sox last Saturday night.
The Texas Rangers won a thrilling 4-3 game which included
homers, squeeze bunt for the winning run, and a lot of other
action. The two that finished second in the contest were Victor
Hvkel(VFW) and Regina Moore (Maler's) for bats, and third place
went to Chuck Zahirniak (VFW) and Celeste Ashley (Maler s)
giving them a bail as their prize.

Some 52 Pixies, Brownies,
Juniors, Cadettes, Seniors and
Leaders attended the Girl Scout
Day Camp held June 5 through
10. The five day event was held
at the West Knights of
Columbus Park from 9 to 2
Monday through Thursday and
4 to 9 on Friday.
Each day the Scouts began
and ended camp with a flag
ceremony thus giving every girl
scout a chance to participate in
raising or retrieving the colors.
Monday's activities were uti-
lized in setting up the camp site
such as fixing a fire circle,
planning menus, naming units
and making unit flags with the
help of Senior Scouts. There
were four different units and
each unit had a different country
to study and learn about. Since
our basic theme was the “World
of Out-of-Doors", each unit
decorated their campsite with a
scene from the particular
country each unit was assigned.
Countries represented France,
India, Mexico and Argentina.
Tuesday through Friday the
activities included PET (physi-
cal education time), conducted
by Gayle Gardner; crafts by
Mary Zahirniak, which included
making an iron-on transfer for a
Tee shirt; and a nature talk
conducted by Clark Fentge,
President of the Waco Audubon
Society and a teacher from
Richfield High School. Every
day a different unit cooked over
an open fire. Menus varied from
Silver surprises to roast cooked
in a bean hole.
Friday, the last day of camp,
parents and friends were invited
to visit and see accomplish-
ments made during the week.
Senior Scouts raised the flag
with an impressive ceremony
and the Cadettes lit the
ceremonial fire. Each unit then
presented a skit, thus closing
another day camp.
Overnight campers were
treated with a hay ride courtesy
of Mr. Ben Clements and Mr.
Ron Holzmann.
This year’s Day Camp Direct-
or and Coordinators were
LaDelle Stobbe and Loretta
Wernet.
The Girl Scouts of West want
to give special thanks to Mr. Joe
Kotch, Mr. Ronald Holzmann
and particularly the KC's for the
use of their facilities and anyone
who helped with Day Camp. We
are looking forward to another
Day Camp next year.
