Letters to the Editor
Dear Editor:
The excitement ofastopforaBullet
Train "outside" the City of Waco is
appalling.The Powers-at-be have sold
out the rural residents of McLennan
County to a Foreign Owned company
which has the right to take our land
and our homes. The Train stands to
never touch any of the City of Waco's
residents. We, as rural residents, have
been against this project from the start.
(Resolution passed by McLennan
County Commissioners, May 1992).
But because of the actionsof a few, we
are now facing a problem of which we
want no part. What, I ask, are these
few individuals willing to give up or
what is in it for them?
The belief that it will affect fewer
lives and less farm land is ludicrous!
Examine a detailed map and you will
find the most productive farm land in
the state being destroyed. The new
route includes St. Paul UCC in Ger-
ald, St. Martin's Church in Tours, and
churches in the Downsville commu-
nity. Do you think these citizen's
concerns have now been eased? Be-
cause of the actions of Waco, one can
only imagine what lives will be
changed dramatically-if not entirely
destroyed.
Glenn Biggs has said they have
listened to the concerns of their "rural
friends." His actions prove otherwise.
Their new route claims to have in-
creased the right-of-way usage from
20 percent to 21 percent. What is kept
silent is that the majority of the 21
percent is in the DFW and Houston
area. _
TGV has said their fares will be
comparable with the airlines. In
Austin, when the new route was re-
cently presented, a Southwest Airline
Executive said they have never lost a
fare war. TGV cannot afford to get
into a price war with anyone. Unlike
Southwest Airlines,TGV has noother
routes to compensate for a loss in
revenue.
Consider that by the year 2010,
TGV must convert over 75 percent of
the people who fly to rail. It is a no win
situation for the Foreign owned TGV
when it comes to being profitable.
And it is an all lose situation for the
rural residents and taxpayers of the
state of Texas.
Rick Wegwerth

Dear Editor:
I was in attendance at the annual
Westfest parade and wasdisappointed
at one thing that happened there.
It seems that a lot of people (mostly
young people) do not have any respect
for the U.S. Hag anymore. As the
’colora’ were carried by, I removed
my hat and placed it over my heart and
noticed directly across from me that
not one person removed his hat or put
his hand to his/her heart.
I don't believe people are disre-
spectful on purpose, but just don't
know any better. This is very sad. I
think people have become compla-
cent about the life we live and the
freedoms we have, not knowing that a
lot of good men and women died for
that flag. Also, I believe Legislators
anttyor School Administrators are more
interested in teaching kids about sex
than teaching Patriotism.
The next time you see a flag be sure
to give it the courtesy and respect it
deserves.

Dear Editor:
Well, they're at it again. Those
folks who are generally found in the
large metropolitan areas of the state
are trying to get in the wallets of the
rural folks. This time it's with the
TGV high speed rail plan.
Remember the Waco zoo that we
all got roped into financing for the city
folks? That was small potatoes com-
pared to this TGV thing. This time a
foreign corporation with the help of
some home-grown thieves are trying
to change our lifestyles and force us to
pay for it. They are trying to tell us that
it will be fully paid for with private
funds yet they are already seeking
federal funds behind our backs.
If they manage to get this thing off
the ground you can look for them to
come to our local governments to build
a station for them.
In addition to the obvious financial
costs there are hidden costs. A lot of
county and some state roads will be
closed or detoured. Just think what
this will do to response times for law
enforcement, fire trucks and ambu-
lances, not to mention school bus and
mail routes.
If you are still telling yourselves
that it will be worth it because we will
have cheap transportation to other
areas of the state then consider this.
Unless the federal government (tax-
payers) subsidize it, the average rail
fare will be $125.
If this thing can't be built by an
American company without tax dol-
lars on existing interstate highway
rights-of-way then we don't need it.
Yours truly,
R.W. Schiemenz
Waco
I would like to send this letter to the
West City Council as a public mes-
sage.
I cannot be sure just how much of
a nuisance it may be to other residents
of West, but the trains that come
through our town appear to be on the
increase and with more air horn noise
pollution. Therefore, I sent correspon-
dence first to Jim Nugent, Railroad
Commissioner to explain what might
could be done about the problem. In
typical political language I soon
learned that while he acknowledges
the train traffic is increasing the rest of
his message made it clear I had wasted
a stamp.
In any event it will take the com-
bined interest of the citizens of West
to show enough concern before any-
thing changes.
The problem appears to me to be
this: As trains move from both sides
of West passing through they begin
their "air attack" long before they get
to the city proper. By the time they
have passed through it is likely most
of the inhabitants of West have been
awakened. Some of these train crew
must have had air horns as kids as they
do not get off them until a good dis-
tance out of town. I am mostly ques-
tioning why at 2-3 in the early morn-
ing hours such noise is necessary. All
the major crossing around and in West
have downgates that have huge flash-
ing red lights and bells. The only things
moving around town at these hours
are crickets. I live nearly a mile from
the tracks and even with good insula-
tion and the windows closed it sounds
like the trains are just outside. I won-
der what the people that live around
the tracks feel about this. Maybe some
can get use to it, but it still seems an
unnecessary invasion of privacy.
I would like to ask the city officials
of West their opinion and response to
this letter. Thank you,
Mario Scorzr

Ban On Guns Will Not Stop Murder
By B. R. nonui
"Mutder within the species... is a phenomenon unknown in the whole
animal kingdom, except for man, and a few varieties of rats." -Arthur Koestler
The soaring rate of juvenile crime, school shootings, and senseless murders
has caused many well-meaning people to call for a ban on guns. They feel that
outlawing guns would cause crime to disappear, and frustrated at the lack of
control of criminals, many focus their rage on guns and gun owners while
disregarding more significant factors.
We recently had a visitor, a mental health professional who works near high-
crime areas. Since the doctor's clientele moat likely includes both those who
have peered at their prey through the gunsight and those who have stared in
terror down the muzzle, the view from his vantage point is deserving of
consideration. He feels that our problem is caused by children growing up with
the notion that all differences can be settled with guns. There is indeed some
precedent for this idea; nations have been settling their differences with guns
for ages. As history.is written by the victors, the killing is rationalized arid often
even glorified. Our own dispute with the Indians and our Civil War was won
by those with the firepower and logistical support that enabled them to produce
the highest body counts. The gun was one of the instruments that empowered
the winners fo force their political will on the losers.
However, were guns the sole cause of murder and mayhem, prior to the
advent of gun-powder the world should have enjoyed peace and tranquility but
history tells it quite differently. Long before guns, people were killing each
other with knives, spears and clubs. The gun is a later refinement that makes
killing easier, but outlawing it would not alter the mind of the murderer. If he
