often been called. Texas is thriving with bee hives as there are one-half million
bee hives in our state. Big trucks coming north from Mexico are responsible for
bringing the "Killer Bees" into Texas.
Mr. Jackson said that in October of 1990, a quarantine was put in place near
Weslaco, Texas. He advised us to be concerned about the "Killer Bees" as they
swarm in the spring and attach themselves in various places, such as under
mobile homes about two feet in the ground. They are found on com plants and
around heavy brush. The Africanized bee is smaller than the European bee. In
August of 1992, "Killer Bees” moved further north and so did the state
quarantine. "Bee traps" are checked or run every two weeks. "Killer Bee” traps
or boxes are in the color of blue. The reason they are "blue" is because people
would know that it is a bee trap and should be very careful. The traps are
checked every two weeks and when "Killer Bees" are looking for a place ora
"home", they go into the "blue boxes" and they are "gassed."
Mostof the "Killer Bees" wentnortheast from deep South Texas. Some went
northwest as far as Presido County and north by northeast to Williamson
County. In December of 1992, a swarm of "Killer Bees" was found 60 mites
north of Abilene. European Bees usually swarm into trees, above the groqn&
It was interesting to note that Mr. Jackson said that 75 percent of stings are
made by "yellowjackets." People thought they were "Killer Bees." These tees
are found every month of the year. The "Killer Bees” don't usually swarm in the
cold or winter time as Mr. Jackson said they were told this, but they do swarm
every month of the year.
Jackson concluded his program with a question and answer session.
