LET US U8E SENSIBLE
ECONOMY
"True .economy is not the saving
of money, but the saving of men.”
So says Roger Babson who Bays
that the American people have
gone, from the extreme of speculat-
ing to the extreme of false econ-
omy.
Mr. Babson's statement smack's
with truth. Extravagance and un-
justified expense must be curtailed,
taxes must be reduced, overheads
must be cut, but we must not go so
far that .we- will endanger our so-
cial set up". The reduction pro-
gram in legislatures must be dealt
with sanely and not adopted with-
out due deliberation.
Only a few years ago we were
borrowing money, buying on in-
stallments, pushing for Increased
government appropriations. Today
we have leaped to the other ex-
treme. We fire labor, curtail ex-
penditure's to the bone and the re-
sult is an economy panic.
There is a middle course. We

and reducing incomes to mere liv-
ing costs. So far we have deflated
wages, Securities, commodities and
We are iu the process of deflating
taxes, debts and rents. We needed
to do some of these things and we
have succeeded. The deflated, pro-
cess, has reached the limit., Mr.
llabson says.
The pc. d of the hour now is < on-

economy will defeat our purpose.

A young lawyer had been re-
tained by a farmer to prosecute a
railroad for killing twenty-four
hogs. He wanted to Impress the
Jury with the magnitude of the in-
jury.
"Twenty-four hogs, gentlemen,”
he said. "Just think! Twenty-four.

the jury box. ‘
