while the mail order houses
unlike those in other parts of the state, have a little
money coming in every month in the year. Winter and
early spring vegetables bring a good price and means
ready cash for the truck grower. [ He don’t have to de-
pend on a cotton crop alone and mortgage his crop, teams
and tools in order to get supplies.; Before he has mar-
keted all his vegetables the watermelon crop’is ready for
the market and out of this crop he realizes from $65.00
to $175.00 per car, according to quality. This brings him
good money, and with cheap Mexican labor he can put
in pmd cultivate a big cotton crop with much less expense
than ip many other localities.. When his money crop—
• cotton—is marketed he is free from debt and can put
the money in the bank and pay cas^i for what he needs.
He is independent—trades where he pleases... By^ paying

f than the merchants could possibly afford to give him
under the credit system. Then, too, the , Mexican trade
amounts to a great deal to the merchants. It is npt un-
