a suspicious character who answers
his description closely.

Henry Grinnell, who fitted out an
expedition to search for Sir John
Franklin in 1850, died in New York
on the 30th day ot June, at the ripe
age of 75._
The Social mills, at Woonsocket,
R. I., running fifty thousand spin-
dles and one thousand looms on
cotton goods, was entirely destroyed
by fire Thursday morning, July 2d.
The Freedfnens Saving and Trust
Company, New York city, received
orders on the first from the national
board of trustees, at Washington, to
stop taking in and paying out mon-
ey. The Mother Bank has suspen-
ded.
W. H. Green, arrested at Mata-
moris a few days since on the charge
of forgery, was discharged Wednes-
day last on the ground of insufficient
proof. The judge held that Green
could not be detained longer than
three days under the constitution of
Mexico without proof of the charges
preierred.
The editor of the Dallas Commer-
cial had a very singular accident, a
few days ago, which came very near
snuffing out his mortal candle. He
was jumping from one coach to an-
other, while the cars were in motion,
but an orange peal on the objective
car caused his feet to fly up, and his
corporosity down. Fortunately the
bumper between the two cars caught
him, and he scrambled to his feet,
whole in limb, but pyetty badly used
up.
The Register of Sherman, has es-
poused the cause of Throckmorton
lor congress, while the Courier is
red hot forjudge Hare. Both aspi-
rants are men of talent and ability,
and will make a closely contested
race. As Judge Hare has opened
the canvass, as the laboring man’s
candidate, and appeals for the sup-
port of the hardy sons of toil, whom
he designates “the bed rock of soci-
ety,” we are inclined to think the
chances are in his favor.—Paris

Rev. G. A. Lofton, a Baptist min-
ister of Tennessee, who was in at-
tendance at the recent meeting of the
Baptist Convention at Jefferson, and
who made the tour of the State, has
given a long account of what he saw
and heard in Texas. His report is
published in the Tennessee papers,
and doses as follows:
“The btftt of society, the highest
culture, the mo*t prosperous busi-
ness, the fine* farming, the greatest
and best of men and women, un-
bonded liberality, and the noblest of
churches dot many portions of this
* great land. Let ns look to this land
for the future. I Ho not mean to go
there, but let us keep a watchful eye
on Texas and the West, and build
up the cause which we so much
cherish and love. God bless a peo-
ple whose munificence is as brpad
as the magnificence of their do-
main.”
candidate for the U. S. Congress.
Owing to the resignation of Senator
Trolinger another is to be chosen this
fall; and the Committee also recommend
that the County Convention elect dele-
gates to a District Convention hereafter
to be called. It would probably be well
to have the delegates elected at the pre-
cinct meetings .instructed for whom to
cast their votes, for Congressman and
Senator, which would expedite the busi-
ness of the County Convention and pro-
bably give better satisfaction to the
people.
“GONE HOME.”
Mr. John D. Brown, aged ninety
years, died near Pilot Point last
week. The old man was born in
Giles county, Va., came to Texas in
1846, and up to the time of hi* death
never had a spell of sickness. His
widow, aged eighty, with whom he
had lived sixty-four years and by
whom he had nine children, survives
him. His children are all living ex-
cept one. We learn these facts
from Mr. S. P. Brown, a son of the
diseased (himself an old man), who
attracted our attention to this in-
formation by an answer to an in-
quiry of a friend as to his family:
“We are all well; father has gone
home.”—Denton Review.
