From the Houston Telegram,J
Train No. 4, the one that was robbed at
Hutchins night before last, came In on
tim* yesterday, arriving at 10:45 a.in. A
reporter hastened to interview parties
011 the train and who were present at the
time.
From Mr. It. Terrell, mall agent In
charge of the U. S. mail on the train,
No. 4. and from other parties, the follow-
ing particulars Imre been obtained:
TRAIN ARRIVKS AT HUTCHINS.
The train was south hound and had the
following crew:
Conductor, If. A. Dulflii. .
Engineer, Hank Sullivan.
Baggageman, (.'up Lockhart.
Mall Agent, R. Smell.
Expressman, 11. A. Thomas.
Newsboy, David Jones, 5
THE Nl WSBOY’S STORY. J
David Jones, a newsboy, or "butcher”’
employed by Mr. Wolf to sell papers,
hooks fruits ane sandwiches, on tho train,
makes the following statement 1
Just as the train stopped at the station,
the platform being on the east suTe ol it,
and as the newsboy and Baggageman
Lockhart were standing in the door of the
baggage car, two men approached. One
of me two was a tall, heavy-set man with
boots over his trowsers. a handkerchief
tide across Ills eyes and fare, nod carrying
a double-barrel shot gun. The other was
a short but stout man, with his features
covered in a like manner, but united with
a "thundering big pistol,” to u-e the lan-
guage of the newsboy, both wore
broad brimmed hats of the description
generally worn by cowboys in West and
South Texas.
When the big man approached the door
of the bag. age room he ordered Lockhart
to throw up his liuutu, but lie did not.
Then the robber stuck Ida head into the
car and in a tone of disappointment, re-
marked:
"O, lielll this ain't the ear we want.”
They then 1 the belt rope, uncoupled
the express car ... 1 ordered engineer Sul-
livan to pull ahead, which lie did about a
car length. All this time the platform ol
the depot was lull of people. The news-
boy states that he first saw (lie robbers
coming out of a hoarding house near the
station in such a manner as to excite his
suspicion. There were many p issengers
on the train and not a few in the sleeping
ear.
A KOBBKR STRUCK ON TIIK UUAD WITH A
MAIL SACK.
Mr. Terrel, the mail agent above men-
tioned, gives the following account.
As was his custom, just as the ear stop-
ped. Mr. Terrell ope aid the doot and
threw out a mail hag. It so happened
that at'tbat moment one of the two rob
hers who Imd visited the baggage room
was passing and his head received the
weight of tin -aek. If became enraged
and drawing a pistol, was about firing on
the man who threw it when Terrell slam-
med the door in his face. The latter at
Ihe same time hallooed to Expressman
Thomas in the other end ol tlie car"look-
out,robbers out there.”
With'that lie and Thomas extinguished
the lights, and went Lo hiding their valua-
bles.
After uncoupling the express car the
(helves hallooed from the outside to Mus-
ed. But the vlllaluf had about got
throngh the mail car and were probably
thinking of riiltlng the paieenger coach,
a little Illinoisan, a passenger, but whose
name could not be ascertained, rushed out
on the platform brandishing his seven-
shooter aad saying, ‘Tm a son of a b—k
If they can rob me.” He commenced fir-
ing upon the thieves, who Immediately
began retreating in the direction of Trin-
ity bottom, firing as they went. For a
few seconds it sounded like a regular and
hot skirmish. As stated yesterday,about
fifteen shots were filed. Expressman
Thomas was shot twice. One bull enter-
ed the side of the neck, producing an ug
ly and probably dangerous wound. Tho
other penetrated the cheek bone directly
under one of the eyes. Yc tcrdar neith-
er of tne bullets had been extracted. He
certainly had a narrow escape. He was
brought down on a sleeper and went
through to Galveston, where his wounds
will be attended to. He is a cousin of J.
L. Thomas, the young man who figured
in the Allen affair.
So far as cuu ho ascertained, none ot the
train men did any firing. United States
mail agent Tenell slated to a reporter that
lie hud no vveopons about him at the time.
During the firing a bullet cut ji hole
through the front part of the vest of the
new sboy Jones as he was running through
tho smoking car. A few inches variance
from its course, and the young ven-
dor ol papers and periodicals would have
been laid out.
AR.MKD GUARDS.
Superintendent Campbell, of the Ex-
press company, in order to prevent a repe-
tition ol last two robberies, lias given in-
structions to his route agents to employ
three armed guards to accompany each
messenger on the road. It is thought this
will present a sufficiently strong defense
to resist further train robberies iu this
