[From the Commercial. J
Great excitement prevails on ac-
count of the arrest of Mr. M. A.
Ilibbler, a well known auctioneer,
(whose place of business was for-
merly on Elm street, but was burned
out last spring, in the Leonard block)
onthe requisition of the Governor
of Mississippi.
<Thfe tnT’frthsr is claimed to have
been committed in July, 1S61, a j
period of fourteen years. The mur- j
dered man’s name was Felix Jones.
Mr. Ilibbler answers the descrip-
tion, and a warrant was placed in the
hands of Deputy Sheriff Scott, who
proceeded to Mr. Hibbler’s farm and
brought him to this city. lie has
been placed in jail, but an effort is
being made to procue a writ of hab-
eas corpus.
His wife is in the city and had an
interview with Sheriff Barkley.
Mr. Ilibbler is well known, and a
highly respected citizen, and we sin-
cerely hope that there is some mistake
existing, and if innocent he will be
able to prove it without trouble.
We understand that the murderer’s
name was Geo. M. Ilibbler. Mr.
Ilibbler has been known here as M.
A. Ilibbler.
The killing was done at Friar’s
Point, Coahoma county, Mississippi.
The requisition has been here for some
time. Mr. Ilibbler, we understand,
admits the killing, but claims to have
done it in self-defense. Also says he
was not surprised at the arrest, The
man shot at him first, he returned the
fire with two shots, one striking in
Jones’ back, the other over the left
eye. _

The Department of the Interior re-
fuses to deli\er to the State of Texas
for trial “ vVhite Horse,” a Kiowa In-
dian, who murdered Koosier, near
Henrietta, Clay county, June 10th,
1870, and afterwards gave the border
settlers much trouble by leadi
ing bands of his followers into the
settlements. The Grand Jury ol I
Montague found a true bill against |
him for murder; but the government
refuses to give him up on the ground
that when hostilities broke out in the |
Indian country, in 1S7J, a promise!
was made that “all Indians who re- j
j main on reservations, and are pcacc-
i able and obedient, that the govern-j
ment will exert all its power to pro- j
tect and defend them,” and that since 1
the promulgation of the above*1. White j
Horse has conformed to its require-

just and remunerate the orphan
children this savage has made for the

I THE SENATORIAL EXCURSIONISTS
ABOUT FACE.
New Orleans, April 4.-*-The
Senatorial excursion to Mexico is
abandoned.
Advices from Washington state
that the fear of yellow fever, and the
illness of Mrs. Morton, are among j
the causes alleged for change of
front, which is regarded as signifi-
cant. Senators Anthony, Cameron,
Chandler, Denis and Patterson, and
General McVeigh and wife, sailed
on the Dispatch to-day for Cedar
Keys and a cruise along the Florida
coast; thence to some Atlantic
port. 1
Senator Morton is detained at the
St. Charles hotel on account of the j
illness of Mrs. Morton, who is ini- ,
proving. They will probably go by-
rail to-morrow.
The steamer City of Havana sailed
at noon for Vera Cruz, having been ,
detained several hours for the arrival
of important dispatches from Wash-
ington for the Mexican government.1
The following are among the pas-
sengers : Col. Thos. H. Scott, Mr.
Mackey, Philadelphia; Hon. Wm.
Walter Phelps, N. Y.. Ex-Governor
James E. Brown, wife and son, Capt.
Grant, Mr. Nulling and son, Miss
Peters, of Georgia; Ben. Perlev

On Saturday last a man by the
name of Young delivered himself up
to the authorities of this place for a
forgery, committed some time ago,
against Eadus & Co., lor $75.00.
We visited the jail to-day and had
an interview with the prisoner. He
is a man about thirty-five years of
age, light complexion. 11c stated
that he came to Texas on account ot
an old charge against him lor the
same otlense against Harding Bros.,
cotton factors, of Baltimore. He
was in the employ of R. H. Foat &
Co., and Eadus & Co., keeping their
books. After the commission of the
act he went west, and after getting a
considerable distance from here turn-
ed back and gave himself up. He
claims to be a widower with four
children, and is evidently a man ad-
dicted to strong liquors. In fact, his
conversation and appearance would
lead one to believe that he was partial-
ly deranged from that cause.—Dal-
las Commercial.
Wright’s statement in regard to
cruelties practised toward prisoners
in the penitentiary is awakening the
public, and will cause a searching
investigation. The statements ol
Wright are coroborated by Adam
Dean, of Austin. Let justice be
done in this matter.
