BAXTER RECOGNIZED AS GOVERNOR.
It was made known by the tele-
graph on the 15th, that the Attorney
General had given an opinion in
Baxter’s favor. He says it would
be disastrous to allow the proceed-
ings by which Brooks obtained pos-
session of the office to be drawn into
a precedent. There is not a State
in the Union in which they would
not produce conflict, and probably
bloodshed. They cannot be upheld
or justified upon any ground, and in
bis opinion, Elisha Baxter should
be recognized as the lawful execu-
tive of the Sfate of Arkansas.
A dispatch reached Little Rock
at 5 p. in., May 15, from President
Grant rcognizing Baxter as Gover-
nor, and ordering the Brooks mob
to disperse.
Baxter captured Brooks’ carriage,
his daughter and his coachman on
the 15th.

On the steps of the Texas Capitol,
at Austin, stands a small monument
built of stones taken from the ever
memorable Alamo, at San Antonio.
A correspondent in Scribner's
Monthly alludes to it and adds:
“The? monument is but a feeble me-
morial of one of the most tragic
events in American history, and the
State should place a stately bronze
or marble column in Alamo Plaza,
in San Antonio, without delay.”
This handiwork ot an humble patri-
ot of the Texas Republic was con-
siderably disfigured during the war,
by some one who resorted to that
means of recording his hatred to the
Southern cause and Texan patriot-
ism.
