Coiion, the Washington agitator
has subsided afier an interview with
the president.
Hon. John Hancock is quietly
but surely marching to viotory in
the congressional race.
All hope of any material abate-
ment in the yollow fever scourge
until frost has been abandoned.
Th« War Department does not
credit the report of the mobilization
and advance of the Moxican army.
Ben Hill, of Goorgla, prodiots
that the next House of Representa-
tives will be Democratic by fully
fifty majority.
ifR. John Sherman, the agile sec-
retary of the treasury will follow
tho requirements of the resumption
act promptly and to the letter.
The Register is crying itself hoarse
for nominations. Woll, we cannot
but stand amazed at the agility with
which that distinguished journalist
flopps around.
John Ireland is doing somo ener-
getic campaign work against Mr.
Schleicher and is going lo give the
portly German a very closo race
for Congross.
The National-Greenbaekors of
this district have found an Arnold
von Winkelroid at last in Capt.B.M.
Dnggeti, ol Fort Worth. Tho Capt.
comes to the front and makes a
self-offering. Of course ho does not
harbor the idea that ho will bo
elocied but simply wants to fee 1
tho strogth of the parly. Of Capt.
Daggolt we know nothing, hence
cannot say how well he can with-
stand Mr. Wellborn’s needle-guns.
or against n nominating conven-
tion. In this coaneotion it should
bo remembered that this question
wm once settled in tho negative.
The ostensible reason for asking
Democrats of Grayson county to re-
consider their former docisioo is
that tba Nstional greenhackers hav-
ing pat a ticket in the Bold, Demo-
crats should do likewise. We do
not bolieve that a well-informed man
in Grayson county harbors the Idea
that a single candidate on the Green-
back ticket will be elected by tbe
strength of the party. If one is
elected it will be due to personal
popularity and rocoguized worth.
Many of the candidates now an-
nounced for the various offices are
out by tbe permission of tho Demo-
cratic party of the county. Would
It be just now after inviting them to
an open field to rule them off by
making nominations—particularly
wben there is not the least possible
necessity for it? Could you blame
those candidates wfio have gone to
tbe expense of announcing and,
many of them, of canvassing, if
they would bolt tho action ot a con-
vention at this date? Surely not.
It should, also, be remembered that
this call for primary elections to de-
termine whethor or not tho people
desirod nominations was not made
by the executive committee in the
belie! that iho peoplo demanded op-
portunity for such expression but
more to give them nn opportunity
to confirm wbat had already been
done. To-day tho opposition to a
convenlion is stronger than it was
in Juno. Then Denison sent her
delegation to the county convention
instructed for nominations ; on tho
5th of October she will declaro as
strongty against nominations.
The people are opposed to nomi-
nations, first, because there ;s no ne-
cessity for thorn and, soeond, because
such action now would bo unjust to
and work a hardship upon tho can-
didates announced. For these rea-
sons ihe Herald has and will op-
pose nominations.
The Star-Vindicator claims that
Harris was counted out by tho lower
bouse of the Chickasaw legislature,
and intimates that ho (Harris) will
appeal bis case to the Commissioner
of Indian affairs.

tween Mr. Martin and a Nulional-

the other out of tho Democratic

Annus Cook was a noted courte-
san of Momphis and the owner of a
palatial building which was fitted up
and occupied for sinful purposes.
Whon the plague appeared this wo-

Cincinnati Commercial: — Those
who trust to legislation for miracles,
and dream that government can cre-
ate money, are doomed to disap-
pointment. The laws that govern
the commercial world and rcgulato
finance are bigger than even the con-
gress of the United States.
St. Louis Globe-Democrat: — It
would injure the prospect of an
early resumption of specie payment,
if Secretary Sherman would consent
to keep still for a little wliilo. One
day ho is in favor of immediate
resumption, in silver or gold or
anything else that comes handy, tho
next lie seems filled with Btrunge
misgivings, and countermands all
previous orders. Tho result is that
nobody knows wiiat caprice may

her last days certainly attoned for
much of the shortcomings of her un-
happy life. The Courier-Journal,
noticing her death says:
Meanwhile we can only drop a tear up-
on the grave of the poor woman, who, af-
ter years of sin, years it may be of sorrow,
closed her life by an act which, however
it may move us, will not cause the angels
to weep. In proportion that the courte-
san has no hope in this world, the hope of
the world to come is not. and cannot be.
