A. Your neighbor is right;
it is true. A weed-free and
trash-free garden makes it
harder for insects to get a
foothold and that makes
them important factors in
pest control. Another way to
head off damaging pests is to
plant different garden veget-
ables, or at least plant them
in different areas each year.
Even the most conscien-
tious preventive .measures are
not likely to solve all your
pest problems. When there
are large numbers of insects,
or noticeable insect damage,
you’ll probably need help
from insecticides. One of the
fnoet widely recommended
insecticides for lawn and gar-
den use is Sevin" carbaryl in-
secticide. It controls over 200
lawn and garden pests, is bio-
degradable and contains no
harsh smell.

ing your garden weed- and in-
sect-free, write to: P.O.

Drinking, fatigue lead
/
to boating accidents
Persons who condemn
drunk drivers on the
roadway often figure dri-
nking while operating a
boat is permissible.
Bui U.S. Coast Guard
researchers have found
that alcohol consumpti-
on, especially when com-
bined with fatigue from
long hours on the water,
can have just as disas-
trous effects as drunk
driving.
Officials said most boa-
ting accidents are opera-
tor related and vision
related. "Drinking and
fatigue cause the field of
vision to become narrow-
er," said John C. Bern-
hartsen in a Coast Guard
publication. "In other
words, several hours of
boat operation can devel-
op something similar to
tunnel-vision or hiehwav
hypnosis."
In a Coast Guard study
of boat operators who
consumed controlled am-
ounts of alcohol, resear-
chers noted that with a
blood-alcohol content of
.10 the individuals often
missed signals from eith-
er side of the boat.
"When fatigue and alco-
hol were combined, it
became apparent that al-
cohol interacted with and
increased the effects of
fatigue,” Bernhartsen s-
aid. "Operators who we-
re fatigued and whose
blood-alcohol content w-
as .10 or more missed 10
or more times as many
signals as operators that
were merely fatigued."
Another finding of the
study was that among the
operators asked to rate
their performance after
the tests, those who had
been legally drunk tend-
ed to over-rate their
ability, while sober oper-
ators were more conser-
vative.

materials on boating saf-
ety, write the Water

rks and Wildlife Depart-
ment, 4200 Smith School
