THE METHODIST CHURCH
Lawrence M. Greenhaw, Pastor
1 Block from High School
Young Adults on Sunday morning
elected these officers for the com-
ing year: Roddin Purswell, presi-
dent; Coach George Holst, vice-
president; Mrs. L. L. Stevenson,
secretary. Mrs. G. G, Hope is the
teacher. The next Sub-District
meeting of the group will be at
Palacios on February 1, with Eli
Mayfield as president. The last
Sub-District meeting was held last
week in Ganado.
The new class of Intermediate
boys met for the first time on
Sunday, with their new teacher
Mr. L. L. Stevenson, Agriculture
teacher in the High School. They
are meeting in the pastor's study,
and have plans for some wonder-
ful times during the Fall and Win-
ter.
The Youth of the Church are
doing a wonderful work und« the
leadership of Coach Geo. Holst who
meets with them in their Sunday
evening programs, and with G.
G. Hope, their choir leader. The
Youth and Young Adults again
last Sunday provided the music for
the church servites in their out-
standing way.
Next Sunday at 7 o’clock, the
delegates to the recent District
Conference at Beeville, will make
reports of various phases of the
meeting which impressed them.
Those attending and to to make
reports are: the Pastor, Carolyn
Bates, Lurlean Sikes, J. D. Munds,
Frank Gillespie and Mrs. Walter
Milam. Carolyn is now the District
Secretary of Youth and Sub-Dis-
trict Vice-President. Jack Partain
is Sub-District Commissioner. Last
year’s District President was from
this Church and two of the recent
Sub-District Presidents are from
this church.
The new highway signs pointing
towards the church are a project
of the Youth Department, aided by
Carpenter G. G. Hope who made
them, and by the pastor who dug
the holes with the help of various
buckets of water.
Special appreciation is due the
two extra large congregations of
last Sunday. At both of the church
services and at the Church School
there were extra good attendances.

will extend from Port Lavaca to
the Lavaca River. The proposed
channel would be dredged over a
bottom width of 100 feet and ap-
proximately 9000 feet long extend-
ing in a northeasterly direction to
shore a/id for a distance of ap-
proximately 1.0 mile adjacent to
and parralle! to the shore to a
proposed turning basin, approxi-

CHRISTIAN SCIENCE SERVICE
Christian Science service will be
held at 10 o’clock Sunday morning
at 605 First Street. The public is
cordially invited to attend.
“Mortals and Immortals” is the
subject of the Lesson-Sermon which
will be read in all Churches of
Christ, Scientist, on Sunday, No-
vember 14.
The Golden Text is: “If ye live
after the flesh, ye shall die: but
if ye through the Spirit do mortify
the deeds of the body, ye shall
live” (Romans 8:13).
Among the citations which com-
prise the Lesson-Sermon is the
following from the Bible: “He that
committeth sin is of the devil; for
the devil sinneth from the be-
ginning. For this purpose the Son
of God was manifested, that he
might destroy the works of the
devil” (I John 3:8).
The Lesson-Sermon also includes
the following passage from the
Christian Science textbook, “Science
a,nd Health with Key to the Scrip-
tures” by Mary Baker Eddy: “Mor-
tals will disappear, and immortals,
or the children of God, will appear
as the only and eternal verities of
man. Mortality is finally swallowed
up in immortality” (page 476).

"A Tale Of Two
Cities" Will Be On
KIOX Friday Night
Charles Dickens’ masterful story
of the French Revolution, "A Tale
of Two Cities," has been selected as
the seventh radio drama to be
broadcast in "Great Scenes from
Great Plays" over Station KIOX
at 7:00 p.m., Friday, November 12,
by Protestant Episcopal families in
Matagorda County. Mr. Brian
Ahcrne, for many years a star on
Broadway and in Hollywood, plays
the role of Sidney Carton, the
brilliant London lawyer who sacri-
fices his life on a French gallows
to save the life of Charles Darnay,
his friend, and husband of the girl
he loves.
This story of self-sacrifice—of
innocent victims caught up by
forces much greater than them-
selves—of one man who redeemed
himself a^d others hy a great act
of selfless love is undoubtedly one
of the greatest dramas of all time.
It is also a story of great strength
and great emotional appeal.
One of the principles of the
Christian religion is the power of
self-denial and self-sacrifice. It is
also one of the principles most
easily overlooked or forgotten,
which is why “A Tale of Two
Cities’’ was chosen to give added
emphasis to this point. Only by
sacrifice of selfish interest can a
satisfactory family life be built.
Only by mutual sarifice can sound
relations be established between
peoples of different racial origin
and religion and only by mutual
sacrifice can the nations of the
world build a permanent and en-
during peace.
time between 7:45 a.m. and 4:30
p.m., Monday through Friday.
Any protest you have to make
against the proposed operations
from the standpoint of navigation
should be received at the above
office not later than 12 November
1948; otherwise it will be consid-
ered that there are no objections.
The decision as to whether or
not a permit will be issued must
rest primarily upon the effect of
the proposed work on navigation.
The Corps of Engineers cannot
undertake to adjudicate conflicting
claims to property rights affected
hy the proposed work.

LESTER'S GESTURES . . .
We don’t know how fast our automobile will run.
Neither do we know how far we can lean out of a
tenth-story window.
Still, if a woman doesn’t have a strong sense of
intuition, how is it that she knows long before a man
does, what he is going to do?
One of the heights of disappointment is reached
when a friend of long duration drops back into the
limbo of mere acquaintances.
Surveys reveal that gum-chewing stenographers
are faster typists than their non-gum-chewing sis-
ters . . . which proves that women are happier
when working their jaws.
