Candidates file now for
Silver-Haired Legislature
Texans 60 years of age and
older have an opportunity to be-
come representatives from this re-
gion to the Texas Silver-Haired
Legislature (TSHL). Candidacy
filing officially began January 2
for the locally-elected, all-senior
advocacy group which works with
the Texas Legislature and other
state officials to develop laws ad-
dressing major issues that affect
older Texans.
The TSHL’s 116 unpaid mem-
bers meet every two years in
Austin to deliberate upon and sug-
gest appropriate legislative ac-
tion. Each member is responsible
for staying in touch with key is-
sues in his or her multi-county
“district” and bringing those con-
cerns to the attention of both the
TSHL as a whole and lawmakers.
Registered Texas voters who
are 60 years of age or older may
file as candidates through Febru-
ary 29, 1996. Terms run for two
years. TSHL members must pay
all of their own expenses. Elec-
tions for the Texas Silver-Haired
Legislature will be held May 28,
1996.
