NEW YORK, April 11. (U.R)—The
i little man was smiling as,he contem-
; Hated his baseball past and looked
• abend eolififjfnUy to his future.
■ I'm wnikin in a sunny cloud,"
said Phil Rixssuto. ‘‘And I should
h.ave quite n few years left—if I
. don't run Into injuries.”
That was last winter, after he
ha? led the New York Yankees to
the world championship and been
named the most valuable player in
!he major leagues.
Today It's different The clouds
are dark and stormy, for the superb
little shortstop has developed' a
straned back which may keep him
out of the lineup opening day.
There's no certainty, at the present.
, how serious it might become, or
hew recurrent it might be.
So. the Yankees are praying for
j another of the miracles which have
; helped the club continually during
; two roaring years under Casey
j Stengel. If they don't come up with I
| tills ore more, you can write them j
i , ff in the 1951 pennant chase.
For getting it successful Rlzzuto
[ replacement would take a first class
miracle, not a minor one. It has
become more and more apparent,
during, the past two seasons, just j
how invaluable the five foot, six i
inch shortstop is to the Yankees.
In 1949 he was great. In 1950 he j
■ a terrific , Last season he hit a 1
: • imirdiiv .324 hi- best all-time \
batting mark, and posted twoAmer- |
lean League defense records. These ,
were the acceptance of 283 chances j
without error over a string of 58 ;
consecutive games. It shattered the
marks compiled by Eddie Joost of i
the A’s in 1947-'48 when he went |
42 games with 266 errorless chances.
But the records consist of cold
figures which actually prove little.
Rizzuto pointed out that he would
rather hit .250 and get those hits
when they were needed, than hit a
wasted .350 when the bases were
empty, and that errors didn’t both-
rr him as long as the club won.
They don't show the manner in
whidh he glues together that Yan-
kee middle, the fire and dash with
which he peerlessly plays his posi-
tion and the stern resolve the little
:uv builds in larger, more muscular
athletes wearing the Yankee flan-
nels.
One record does prove his worth.
The Yankees played 155 games last
reason. So did Rizzuto. And the
Mighty Midget was the only man
on the team to play in every game.

The opening of the Texas

bust last night with two games,
both in Oklahoma, postponed be-
cause of cold or wet weather.
But at Shreveport and Beau-

start with victories.
