The Dodgers’ Gil Hodges was
getting the home run raves to-
day but just one round tripper
in back of him was the man who
may depose Ralph Kiner as the
National League home run
champion — Wally Westlake of
the Pittsburgh Pirates.
Hodges is setting the pace with
14 homers which has 'put the
Dodger first baseman 7 games
ahead of Babe Ruth’s record 60
pace of 1927. Practically over-
looked has been Westlake, whose
13 out of the park pokes have
put him six games up on the

Camilli, Stan Hack, Bruce Ed-
wards and Tommy Glaviano is
a real threat.
Yet, while he and Hodges have
started of! with a real bang, and
Kiner figures to come roaring
up with a late challenge, none
of them are really expected to
surpass the Babe’s imjnortal 60.
Those last few weeks, and last
few homers, seem to have forg-
ed an insurmountable barrier.
Hack Wilson of the Cubs was
the first of, the close misses in
1930 when he hit 56—but failed
when only 10 came up for him
in the last month. Jimmy Foxx
of the A’s hammered 58 in 1932.
He appeared a cinch, with 55 at
the end of August, but came up
with a sprained wrist and hit
only three in September. Hank
Greenberg also hit 58, in 1938,
but didn't get a one in the final
week of play. «
