In Our Thirty-Fourth Year
Of Continuous Service
jess jawin Fighting Inflation
President Carter has finally managed to engage in hand-to-hand combat in
his war against inflation which he announced nearly two years ago.
The President deserves good points for making a firm decision about
balancing the budget and trimming the fat from government outlays which
many times are duplicates of programs already in operation.
^ The sad fact is that few people realize what a mess we’re in with a soaring
national debt which will soon command enormous and outrageous interest
rates to finance. At this writing the prime rate has skyrocketed to 19 percent
— the highest in this nation’s history. An ordinary business borrower would
have to pay 23 to 25 percent to keep his business going. The only alternative is
not to borrow or, if the decision is made to go further into debt, then the
, producer adds the cost on to the product further increasing inflation and
j£| decreasing productivity.
We mentioned earlier that most people in government do not know beans
about the national debt. Here’s a case in point: Wednesday, we tried to find
out just how much the national debt was and to whom it was owed. We called
the General Accounting office in Dallas. They didn’t know. They referred us
to the Comptroller of the Currency. The COC’s legal talent said they have no
business with the debt. They just manage banks and try to keep their
9 currency obligations in check. We then tried several other offices. To no avail.
Last week we called the Director of Budget and Management. He never
returned our call but an aide did while we were out and he never called back
even though our concern for the debt and budget was paramount because
perhaps we did have an idea to trim both.
^ Public Broadcasting System told us they were not interested in pursuing
I the debt. Their producer said we “ought to talk to some congressmen and see
8 what they think.” Their financial reporter thought we had a real good idea but
he, too, said he’d get back to us and never did.
So we went to the legislators: Scoop Jackson said we had an interesting
theory but he’d send some of his speeches. Martin Frost, a dear and loyal
friend, thought we had a great idea but he’d have to research it through the
^ Library of Congress and let us know. We’re still waiting.
8 Well, the idea is simple indeed. We owe close to $850 billion. As well as we
can determine [and until we can get the deliniation] 75 percent of this is owed
to the “public.” That may mean you and me and a host of others.

The important thing is that it costs us nearly $80 billion a year just to carry PrflfCP of Carter
the debt. And we’re asking people to cut down on their credit!

A laugh riot.
Stop laughing and start considering. We can really beat inflation. Here’s
how: Use 50 percent of the “windfall profits tax” and all of the 10 cents per
gallon gasoline tax and apply it directly to reduce the national debt. Pay it off
pronto. Save ourselves while there’s still financial and fiscal time and
sobriety. Let us use the balance of the “windfall profits tax” for energy
research and development and for low income groups who cannot afford high
heating and food costs.
Let us use beautiful red, white and blue shields and place them on every
gasoline pump in America and tell the public just how much of their gasoline

Evron Calls Repudiation
of UN Vote 'Courageous'
WASHINGTON [WNS] -
Ephraim Evron, Israel’s
Ambassador to the United
States, declared here that
President Carter’s repudia-
tion of the U.S. vote
supporting the March 1
Security Council resolution
condemning Israel was “an
act of courage.” He told 800
delegates attending the
biennial meeting of the B’nai
B’rith Women, that “We
accept it in the spirit in
which it was given.” Evron
said that Israel received the
news of the UN vote with
“dismay” because “we re-
spect President Carter.” He
said the “resolution contra-
dicts nearly every instance
in which the positions and
the policies of the U.S. as
expounded and stated by the
President and his associates
as privately explained to us
on numerous occasions.” The
Ambassador spoke as the
