HAPPY HOLIDAY ,
Here is your Post Chanu-.
kah Issue. We hope you like '
it. A1 Segal will take you back
to the time of the Macabees and
tell you how he “was there”
(and so were you!) In your
postpages you’ll find a long
feature on how Jews have
helped our servicemen from
the “Civil War to the Cold
War.” Counterparts of the
women and men in your com-
munity have been trying to
fill the spiritual and morale
needs of the military for near-
ly a 100 years. You’d be sur-
prised to learn tha>t service-
men of blue and grey worship-
ped with each other during
the high holy days.
We’re sure you’ll like your
postpics. We’ve paged a few
this issue with the help of post-
tographers Paul Bynum in
Dallas and Bob Bogen in Fort
Worth.
We’re especially grateful for
the fine support given us by
our advertisers. Our loyal ad-
vertisers deserve your paton-
age. We’d appeciate it greatly
if you would mention that you
saw their ad in the Texas
Jewish Post.
To our subscribers, readers
and advertisers we wish the
best of holidays. We trust that
in the coming year the world
will see the true meaning of
Peace. Shalom..
It seems so ridiculous for
people to continue salughter-
ing each other. In the final
analysis they have to talk
things over.
For us that Friday evening
prayer keeps repeating over
and over: . . . when all men
will beat their swords into
ploughshares. . . and the world
will know war no more. . .
Have a happy holiday, folks.
And may God bless you.

postcolumn:
Plain Talk
By ALFRED SEGAL
I WAS THERE
Mr. Ziprin (he’s head of the syndicate that distributes this
column) admonishes me to be sure and write something aboui
Chanukah. And what to say again of Chanukah about which sc
much has been written by others, as well as by me, in all the
centuries?
So, thinking of this or which I may write about Chanukah, 1
suddenly remember: Yes, I was there when it all began—as
far back as the years 175-164 before the Christian era by which
the universal calendar dates us all. Yes, sure enough, I was
there.
As one of the Jews of that period (we’ve never died, really!)
I can remember the events. My father patted me fondly on my
young head when he went away to fight with the Maccabees
against the king, Antiochus Epiphanes, far back there, in 175.
Your family was living in Jerusalem then, and I was 10 or
thereabouts. My name wasn’t Alfred then. I was then'called
Abraham for the father of us all; for short, I was known to my
parents and brothers and sisters as Abba. (Long, long later I
was to be given the name Alfred in the style of nomenclature
of the period.)
It’s all to the good for a Jew to take himself back almost
3,000 years, as I am doing: It lends him the dignity of feeling
like an eternal man. So let’s all go together back to that ancient
time. We were all there together. CONTINUED TO PAGE 2
