Looking Toward Israel
Continued from Page Six
realizing the scope of Nasser’s
sinister designs, also begins to
see Israel as her natural ally.
WHILE BY NO means dis-
counting the matter of morale,
which is the No. 1 weapon of Is-
rael, let’s look fior a moment at a
few other offsets to the Arab
armament advantage. Her peoples
are consumed with hatred, for
Israel, the West, and from time
immemorial, for each other. The
rival feuds, corruption and in-
trigue keep the Arab League from
being the solid front it appears
to be in our daily papers. Illus-
tration: Shortly after the Gaza
strip incident, all of the Arabs
met in conference, each offering
aid to wipe out Israel. Syria’s
Prime Minister made a concrete
offer to send a battalion to the
Gaza strip. A week later Egypt
protested to Syria that the king
forgot to tell his Army Chi^f of
Staff to send the battalion.
Saudi Arabia, the most feudal
of all the Arab nations, is con-
nected with Egypt through a mili-
tary pact. There are about 30
schools in the entire country, with
very few children attending. A
movement afoot to dethrone Ibn
Saud, an absolute monarch, has
him deeply worried about possi-
ble loss of his throne and oil rey-

THE OUSTING of Glubb Pasha
from Jordan many believe will
reduce the Jordan fighting force,
bereft of their British officers, to
the ineffectual fighting force the
Arab armies proved to be in 1948.
Lebanon is composed of more
than half Christians, for which
reason its government has avoid-
ed taking a census for many years.
There is much friction between
the Moslem and Christian “min-
ority,” which has always been
unfairly treated. Another contrast
to united Israel.
WITHIN THE ARAB countries,
four out of every 10 babies die.
Over 80 per cent of the people are
debilitated by disease. Only 4 per
cent of their land is arable. Nas-
ser’s widely heralded “reforms”
ceased after giving 5 per cent of
the land from the aristocracy to
the peasants.
The only way out of his fantas-
tic promises is to seize more land.
Yet, despite being the hero of the
Arab world, Nasser has failed to
win over the Egyptians them-
selves. The landlords are still
powerful and famous for heading
deposed leaders. Even if the As-
wan dam is built, it will take a
great deal of education and farm-
ing to make this land productive
by a population which knows
nothing of these arts and where
education is limited to a very
few.
Thus, the terrible grinding pov-
erty, disease, illiteracy, and fin-
ally a debt of over 300 million
dollars for armaments are the real
enemies of the Arabs. Their lead-
ers may one day find that giving
the Communists entry to their
countries will result in their be-
ing the first to be liquidated
themselves. They will find that
Russia does not need their oil,
being ah oil exporter herself.
Neither does she have the ships
to get the oil out of the Middle
East if she chose.
THE U. S. could throttle the
whole industry in a few hours
through the refineries. It is be-
lieved that in case of war this
will certainly be done, so that in
actuality we have already written
off the oil in that part of the
world.
