UNIVERSAL YOM KIPPUR
The idea of a universal Yom Kippur in which all the faiths
of the world would participate may well sound like a gimmick
to sophisticates, pragmatists and cynics. But with the world more
than knee-high deiep in trouble, one wonders whether such a rem-
edy might not after all be effective, or at least as effective as the
rest of the remedies that have been prescribed by the experts for
the malady of our day—nuclear madness.
The significance of such an observance, Rabbi Albert G.
Miinda suggested at the annual convention of the Central Confer-
ence of American Rabbis would be to demonstrate humanity’s
overwhelming determination “to avert the man-madle evil decree”
of nuclear war.
There may be questioning whether the distinguished rabbis’
response to the dreadful predicament in which all mankind has
been fixed since the dawn of the nuclear age is realistic, or, even,
whether this is properly tlie business of a Jewish religious organ-
ization since the “mea culpa” and forgiveness theme is of the es-
sence of other faiths as well. It might also be asked: Does human-
ity’s overwhelming determination too avert nuclear war really
need demonstrating? Can the complex and delicate forces main-
taining the balance of nuclear terror be reduced to the shorthand
proposition that mankind’s determination to avert war can some-
how be a key factor to that end?
We wish we had the answer. But our editorial wisdom is
rather limited, though we might suggest that we like the idea of
the “observance of a Universal Yom Kippur, a day of atonement
and reconciliation, a day of prayer, penitence and of seekng the
path leadng (to the blessing that shall make for the life of all and
the death of none” providing fhle call for such observance is
coupled with firm admonition that every responsible individual
must do his best to understand the stakes of the global struggle
and tlie forces which keep the nuclear balance from tipping.
