PASSOVER ISSUE — IN OUR SIXTEENTH YEAR
POSTORIAL
THE BIBLE CONTEST
Institutions come and go on the American Jewish scene. One
that is destined to remain with us because of its very character
is the annual national Bible Contest for pupils of Jewish schools.
When the American Bible contest was first launched three
years ago by the Department of Education and Culture of the
American Zionist Council, in cooperation with the World Jewish
Bible Society, the cynics and prophets of doom condemned it as
another experiment in failure. Now that it has entered its third
year amidst widening youth enthusiasm and participation, it is
well to pause in evaluation.
1 The importance of Bible study in the education of Jewish
youngsters both as Jews and as Americans, cannot be overempha-
sized. The verity that the values of the Bible are at the very
cornerstone of Western civilization has never been truer than it
is today, when the world is seemingly falling part because it has
lost sight of those values. In a generation whose young are con-
fused for lack of radiant direction, the Bible more than ever be-
fore offers the rod which alone could lead us out of the wilder-
ness. The Bible has indeed a great deal to say to the young peo-
ple of today.
We like the idea of the Bible Contest, not alone because it
makes the Sacred Book come to life among our young, but also
beacuse it serves as an impetus to Jewish education. If competi-
tion is conducive to learning, the long-range effect of this insti-
tution will be a healthy one on our Jewish educational pattern
in America.
