NASSER’S BLACK RECORD
The tragic story of Nasser’s persecution of Egyptian Jews has
been unfolded to the American public sporadically and in piece-
meal fashion over the past three months. Because of many fact-
ors—among them, Egyptian censorship and deliberate efforts
at obfuscation, as well as an understandable fear on the part
of the expellees to talk freely—a clear picture of the full pro-
gram has been difficult to obtain. The American Jewish Con-
gress has been able to cut through this confusion. In its new
publication, “The Black Record: Nasser’s Persecution of Egyp-
tian Jewry,” the AJCongress presents the first organized, doc-
umented and comprehensive report of the terror in Egypt.
Aptly titled, the new booklet is a full-scale expose of Nasser’s
sinister, Hitler-like program. In the course of laying bare what
it calls “a deliberate and long-planned policy,” “The Black Re-
cord” also punctures several Egyptian propaganda balloons. For
example, the anti-Jewish measures have been defended by Nas-
ser’s spokesmen as a “temporary response” to military hostili-
ties. The record shows that the Egyptian Government promul-
gated a series of detailed, highly complex decrees aimed against
Jews within 72 hours after Israeli forces had moved into the
Sinai Peninsula. These intricate and comprehensive decrees
were obviously the product of considerable study and prepa-
tion, and they were not “Improvised,” as claimed', but a thor-
ough and w£ll-wrought plan for the spoliation and destruction
of the ancient Jewish community. Another myth fostered by E-
gyptian propagandists—that the terror is not anti-Jewish but
merely “anti-Zionist”—is also effectively destroyed by the AJ
“The Black Record” is an invaluable example of what news-
men call “reporting in depth—that is, it presents the facts and
documentation in such a way as to provide a perspective for
the events now taking place. It also does more: the document
outlines a program of action which this nation must undertake
before it is too late.
For every Jew who feels the agony of his fellow Jews, for
every American concerned with the principles of decency and
justice, “The Black Record” is compulsory reading.
