In a fairly full auditorium,
Tuesday, the Jack County
Extension Office brought
a program to the Jacksboro
Middle School students that
was both informative and at
times, shocking.
The subject being dis-
cussed... social media. The
program was presented by
Weldon Floyd, Regional In-
formation Technology Spe-
cialist II,Texas A&M Univer-
sity and Texas A&M AgriLife
Information Technology.
During the presentation,
Floyd discussed the issues
that many people have be-
come painfully aware of in
the time since social media
and smart phones have be-
come a common item of our
lives. Topics such as preda-
tors online, inappropriate use
of the social media and tex-
ting, among them.
Floyd told stories about
how the use of the internet
had changed lives, and not
always for the better.
He made the audience aware
that bad things can and have
happened to people that are
using social media without
taking the right ]

s from
to pro
people who are dangerous.
He also gave suggestions
to the students and parents
that attended the meeting on
how they are able to protect
themselves with a few clicks
of the mouse.
One of the best suggestions
he had for parents was to
have the login and password
information for each of the
accounts in the household.
Floyd suggested to students
who may feel this is an inva-
sion of privacy that it would
guar
their safety and quid
sponse if needed.
He also suggests to use
common sense and extreme
precaution when “friending”
Awareness is a major key to
protecting ourselves. Other
suggestions from Floyd: set
all personal settings to pri-
vate.
He suggested that nobody
be able to see your informa-
tion. Even if you think your
settings on Facebook are set
to private, go in and check
them, and check the settings
for your kids if they have a
facebook page as well.
Taking precaution now may
save you from heartbreak
later.
Plans are currently being
made for Floyd to present his
be the best way to guarantee
people that you don’t know.
Unfortunately, predator
are using social media as
means to locate victims, and
a lot of the victims are under
the age of 18. The program
hit close to home for the kids
and parents as well.
Soon after it was over, many
kids were calling their par-
ents and discussing changes
in their personal settings that
needed to be reviewed and
changed to a more private
setting.
