Letters to the Editor
Your vote is valuable so cast it wisely
Too many people loday either
don’t vote or vote by proxie. In-
variably, these decisions are cos-
tly. Aside from the fact that
thousands of people have, and
still are, giving their lives for the
right to vote all over the world,
the outcome of an election can
be extremely adverse to each in-
dividual who doesn't vote.
Not voting is senseless, but giv-
ing your vote to anyone, without
long, serious consideration of the
consequences is unforgivable.
For example, the last election
held by the Johnson County
Rural Water Commission Board
Thanks for increased
coverage of the band
I wanted to thank you for your
increased coverage and photos of
the Burleson High School
Marching Band. For years they
have been neglected and little has
been written about them and all
the work they do. As a former
marching band member, I
remember all of the long hours
of work that were devoted to put-
ting together a show and prepar-
ing for contest. While in constant
suppoti of the football and bas-
ketball (at non-district games-
bands were prohibited from
district contests) teams, the band
never seemed to receive any sup-
port outside of loyal parents and
a select few leathers and ad-
ministrators Please continue to
report on their progress and en-
courage members of the com-
munity to support all band
activities. The members of the
band are students just the same
as football players and deserve as
much coverage and support as
they get. Often, that support can
make a good organization
great.

Article was offensive;
writing unprofessional
Sally Ellertson's story, “Man
indicted for multiple sex offenses
with children" in the Monday edi-
tion of the Burleson Star, August
20, 1990, was very offensive to
me.
Sally used poor taste by des-
cribing the nature of the sexual
attacks of each child. These
children and their families have
been through enough grief and
pain because of this situation.
They certainly shouldn’t have to
see the details splashed all over
the front page of the Burleson
Star!
A story such as this, dealing
with sexual assault of children is
sad enough, the explicit account
of what happened to each child is
unnecessary.
It appears Sally is more in-
terested in writing a shocking
story than reporting a sad sensi-
tive situation.
Mv heart goes out to the
families involved in this and es-
pecially the children. Hopefully
in the future, Sally will use more
professionalism in reporting deli-
cate situations. I rather doubt if
these were her small children we
would see the detailed nature of
the sexual attacks described on
the Iront page of the Burleson
Star.

of Birec$)rs for their re-election
was carried bv "proxie” votes. In-
dividuals who, for whatever
reason, chose to give their voting
tights away.
This re-elected Board ot Direc-
tors recently signed a contract
with the Johnson County Fresh
Water Commission and the
Brazos River Authority to
purchase water. The maximum
amount of water available from
this contract will, in less than five
years, fall short of the demands
by over 1.5 million gallons a day.
This is a Take or Pay contract that
expires in 2040, at a cost of
$49 million.
To date, each vote is worth ap-
proximately $600 due to rate in-
creases. It the members divide
$49 million by 5,500 members,
they will find the value ot their
vote!
The right to vote is taken en-
tirely too lightly by an alarming
number of citizens. I cannot con-
ceive anyone thoughtlessly giving
away something of this monetary
value, particularly if one of their
loved ones has given their life to
protect this precious right.
Know the value of your vote
and east it wisely for what you
believe in.

Let’s give “Three Cheers” to the
Burleson City Council and tci the
Burleson City Street Crews for
erecting the "NO PARKING”
signs in the 800 Block ot
Ridgeview. This one act by the
City Council will help alleviate a
very serious traffic problem on
Alsburv and may very well save
the life of one of our elementary
school children as they walk and
ride their bikes to and from

It is the editorial policy' of the Burleson Star to publish any original
"letter to the editor” submitted which includes the name and signature
of the writer with an address and phone number. The waiter’s name
and city of residence are included with the published letter, but not
specific street addresses or phone numbers. To be considered for

quirement that the letter be signed when submitted. Consideration of
withholding a signature is at the discretion of The Star and would be
based on there being a clearljAkirimcntal effect to the writer il his ot-
her signature should be published. Additionally, the subject matter ot
the letter must be of significant import to our readership to warrant
the exception of withholding a signature.
The Star docs not publish form letters or copies ol "letters to the
editor,” only original, signed letters which meet the other criteria ex-
plained here arc considered Tor publication.
