IMP Thompsou as Ninth District con-
stituents showed an increased in-
i ..forest in tlie defense effort.
Many wrote about the drafting
tffi of 18-year olds, husbands, apd
fathers. Other favorite subjects
were taxation, goverment expendi-
tures, foreign policy, and price
and wage controls.
While some few were radically
critical of all government actions,
most’ writers offered helpful sug-
gestions and encouragement. They
were deeply concerned over the
present situation, -but expressed
optimism on the eventual outcome.
“It goes without saying that I’m
always glad to receive these let
ters,” Thompson commented. “Aside
from talking to my people personal-
ly, that’s the only way for me to
j know how they are thinking.”
Congressman Thompson has been
presented the “Non Sibi, Sed Pa-
triac‘“ award by the Marine Corps
Reserve Officers Association.
I Brigadier General Melvin J. Maas,
MCROA National President, gave
Thompson the award, “Not for self,
but for country,” in recognition of
his “constant devotion to the inter-
ests of; the National Defense and the
U. S. Marine Corps and Marine
Corps Reserve.”
