Juvenile Crime
“Our most alarming problem
is the rise in the juvenile crime
rate,” Wiley Cheatham, district
, attorney, told members i»f the
Lions. Club Tuesday: He spoke
oil Irvin Reinhardt’s program.
After pointing out the increase
in crime; especially among young
people, Cheatham said there
were a great many needs, in-
cluding a greater emphasis in
religious training, greater em-
phasis in public school work,
war on narcotics, halt teen-age
drinking, do something -about
obscene literature and, most of
all, strive toward better honie
training.
Crime is up 5 per cent, ’ the
district attorney said. It has in-
creased four times more than the
population in recent beat's, dou-
bling since World War II. And
surveys have disclosed, he point- J
ed out, that crime in the rural j
ax-eas is J,wice as great as in the
big cities. Most criminals now
are 17 years of age and under,
he stated.
Cheatham, at the outset of his :
talk, said he recalled with no ;
fondness his high school days
when he came to Edna with
Cuero for football games, Edna
winning most of the time. This
was back in the late ’30’s, he .
said.
Program Chairman Marcell
Maresli announced the following
programs: April 10, Johnny Fal-
loure; 17, business meeting; 24,
Dr. J. R Sawyers; May 8, David
Seligman The joint Llons-Ro-
tary ladies’ night will be May 3,

INCORPORATING
Vanderbilt, thriving commu-
nity in southwestern Jackson
County, is thinking about in-
corporating into a city.
The bustling oil and- farm-
ing section some tffnc ago in-
stalled its otvn water system,
but now there is a need for a
sewage system. In order to
secure federal funds for such
a project, the community
must incorporate, leaders there
have been advised
So. through David Stiles, a
Victoria attorney, preliminary
plans have been initialed -To
incorporate the town.
If they arc successful and
there is little doubt ol ...ulti-
mate success, Jackson County
will have its third incorporat-
ed town, Edna, and Ganado
being the other two.
