SKIMPING IN WRONG PLACES

Where Is It wise to cut costs in your
new homo nnd where is it wise to buy
the best? This is n problem that most
home builders face more than once
during construction. And what is the
answer? It is a problem that every
home owner must 'settle to the best of
Mb ability with the help of his con-
tractor and architect.
Replacement Big Factor
There is one general principle that
con bo set down here however.
Briefly it is this. Any part of your
house that it is not practical to re-
place should have the best in construc-
tion and materials. By this we mean
such items ns footings and founda-
tion timber skeleton and frame work
windows and window frames which
are really part of the house frame
concealed ducts and wiring. All these
things must last the life of the house.
Wiser to Wait
It is wiser to wait for some of the
attractive furnishings and fixtures
until more money is available rather
CREAKY FLOORS Very often
the result of skimping on size of
floor joists. Another example of
the wrong place to cut costs.
DRAFTY WINDOWS Result of
poor fltting and cheap construction.
A few dollars extra spent for pre-
cision built windows and frames
would save enough in fuel costs to
pay for slight extra cost.
than to skimp on fundamental parts
of a house which will only mean costly
repairs excessive heating bills and
disgust and discomfort in years to
come. Remember: if you can't replace
them make them good.

Here is one way to control that
annoying fogging and condensation
" on the windowe in your new home.
Shown here are three casement win-
dows. Notice that two of them are
entirely clear because of inside double
glazing. The other window has had

4p LEAKY JOINT
This is the kind of in-
different window frame
construction that is used
in many new homes. It
results in drafts and dirty
walls around windows.
Arrows point to where
cold air leaks in.
TIGHT JOINT EH
Contractors call this wide
blind stop construction. It
cuts air leakage more than
half around window
frames. Costs just a few
cents extra per window.

the inside double glazing removed
with tho result that it is fogged up
almost immediately. When this pic-
ture was taken the inside room tem-
perature was 71 degrees while out-
side the thermometer stood at 15 de-
grees above zero.
FEW CENTS EXTRA FOR
TIGHT WINDOW FRAMES
IS GOOD INVESTMENT
Don't overlook the importance of
the lowly window frame when you
build your new house. It is the one
thing that permanently joins your
windows with the framework of your
house A window frame properly con-
structed keeps out dirt and drafts by
making a weathei tight joint with the
wall A window frame indifferently
constructed will allow as much as 174
cubic feet of air per hour to leak into
your home air that is often loaded
with dust to dirty up walls and cause
drafts
Good Construction Costs Little
Wide blind stop construction in win-
dow frames has been in use for many
years yet jerry builders will

frames without it in order to cut costs
without regard to consequences. This
type of construction costs about 30c
to 50c more per window opening than
ordinary construction and it' will
quickly pay for itself in heat saved
and added comfort.
Window Frames Permanent
Remember window frames are a
permanent part of tho wall in your
new home. To tear them out and re-
place them is not only a mess but a
big expense ns well. The easiest way
to avoid leaky window frames in your
new home is to buy frames that make
a weathertight wall joint and that
means wide blind Btop construction.

Additional $3000
In Light Plant Bonds
Paid by April 1st.
Three and possibly four thous
and dollars over and above theN
regular payments on the muni-
cipal light and power plant will
be paid on April 1 Mayor R. W.
Miller stated Thursday in speak-
ing of city utilities. The regu-
lar payments are 6000 per year
plus the interest.
The entire 8500 worth of
bonds which become optional on
April 1 this year will be called
in and arrangements have been
made with the Austin National
Bank to take up any that the
city does not have money for at
this time. The bank will then
allow the city to take up the
bonds as soon as money becomes
available. Without this arrange-
ment only the bonds that money
is now available for could called
in at this time.
The additional bonds that the
city will take up April 1 do not
reach maturity until 1944 so
the advance payment means a
saving in interest amounting to
more than S500.
Arrangements are also under
way whereby an additional sav
ing can be made by refinancing
the bonds at a lower rate of in-
terest as soon as the first sec-
tion of bonds which includes the
first half are paid off.
(With continuance of the pres
ent record the plant will be paid
off in the next five or six years
it is estimated.

WOODMEN RECEIVE
REFUND CHECKS
Bartlett members of the
Woodmen of the World have
been elated this month over the
receipt of 'refund checks from
their organization. Nearly dOO
000 Woodmen received checks
during the past few- days for
their share of a million-dollar
refund of payments. The cur-
rent refund brings the total of
payments returned to members
to more than 21 million dollars
a record that is unsurpassed by
any similar organization accord-
ing to De Emmett Bradshaw
president.
Mr. Bradshaw reported that
the Society has paid to living
members and beneficiaries the
sum of 317 million dollars in the
past 50 years. The financial sta-
bility of the Society with as-
sets in excess of 129 million dol
lars places it high among
America's leading life insur
ance organizations.
The amount of each check was
determined by the length of
time the member's certificate
had been in force and the
amount of each annual payment.
