Dear Editor,
Re: The Turner letter of 11-27-01
As a parent and Christian, I
would like you to know that I grew
up with exposure to what you
would label “demonic activity” in
the form of many movies such Bed-
. knobs and Broomsticks, Cinderella,
The Wizard of Oz, and dozens more.
1 was exposed to the literary works
of Shakespeare, Van Goethe, Mark
Twain and other literary greats. In
school 1 studied history which
included everything from the Dark
Ages to Hitler’s massacre of the
Jews. Yet, it did not “destroy my
mind and soul” as you would seem
to believe.
My faith in Christ was instilled as
a child, and my parents had faith
that I was intelligent enough to
make good moral judgments. They
knew that watching Bewitched and I
Dream of Jeannie would no more
lead me to practicing witchcraft
than watching The Brady Bunch
would make me want to dye my
hair blond.
As a parent you have to have
common sense and monitor your
children’s activities, but I will not
forbid my child to watch an age-
appropriate film or read an age-
appropriate book. If I did, would I
have to exclude Bible reading? Af-
ter all, David does some very anti-
ten-commandment things; Cain
does what to his brother?; Sol-
omon’s sexual innuendoes are
everywhere; etc. Do you see my
point? Anything taken out of con-
text is incomplete by definition, and
I have enough faith to let God be
my judge, not society.
1 feel sorry for the people I have
talked to in town that are afraid to
let their “friends” find out that they
took their child to see Harry Potter.
Well, my son saw it, and guess
what...he hasn’t started casting any
spells; he still says his prayers; he
just bought his dad and brother
Christmas presents with his own
money; and he still has his lines
memorized for the church play. And
I have faith in him to make good
choices and let God be his only
judge, but feel free to say a prayer
for us. We don’t mind.
' Sincerely,
Michelle Whittaker

Dear Editor,
Pets. They are everywhere. I’m
not slighting people for having
dogs, cats, birds, etc.
Dogs that are on a chain, in many
cases, get temperamental and ag-
gressive, especially with age.
I had a black chow. Because she
was kept in a fence, people thought
she was mean. This dog was smart.
She knew who went by and never
barked at the mailman. She was get-
ting on in years. On my way out the
door one day, I passed by the old
refrigerator and grabbed a wiener
for the road. After a bit, I just did
not want it anymore. I reached
down to give it to the dog. She
clamped down on my fingers. I did
not jerk. Eye contact was made. I
had to put her down a couple of
days later.
A dog will also tear into a trash
bag, and when struck by a car, they
refuse to land out of sight, although
cats tend to lay flat when struck by
a fast-moving Chevy.
All pets are neat when kept that
way. But now cats are cool. They
never bark. They will tell you when
they want outside. In the weather of
Nov. 28, it didn’t take them long.
In closing, spay or neuter your
pets. They will love you longer for
it. Think before you buy one for a
child for Christmas.

TEXAS ANGELS
Taken from the Greenville Herald
Banner, Nov. 28, 2001
Dear Editor,
On Sunday, Nov. 11, around 1:00
p.m. my husband and I were travel-
ing north out of Emory towards
Greenville. My husband had not
been feeling well all day and asked
me to stop the car. While he was
standing by the open passenger side
door, he lost consciousness and
started to collapse. With one hand I
was trying to hold him up while
with the other hand I was waving at
the passing traffic and yelling
“help” at the top of my voice.
Almost at once three vehicles
stopped. As soon as I said that my
husband might be having a heart
attack or a stroke, there were at least
two cell phones in operation calling
911.
The first driver who stopped was
a woman who worked in a hospital,
and she said the best thing was to
get my husband to drink some
orange juice. I told her that I didn’t
have any in the car. The second dri-
ver who stopped said he had some
in the car and went to get it. The
third driver said that if my husband
was having a heart attack he had
some aspirin for him to take. The
second driver returned with some
orange juice. From somewhere a
plastic glass appeared and my hus-
band agreed to drink some juice and
take the aspirin. The drivers all
stayed until the ambulance arrived,
lending moral support and encour-
agement.
Just before the ambulance started
for the hospital, a pickup pulling a
horse trailer stopped. There were
three people in the pickup and the
woman offered to drive our car to
the hospital if I was too upset to
drive myself. They apologized for
taking so long to get back to where
we were stopped. They had to go
quite a ways to find a place where
they could turn the pickup and
horse trailer around.
The diagnosis at the hospital in
Greenville was extreme dehydra-
tion, not a stroke or heart attack.
After an overnight stay in the hospi-
tal, we were on the road home to
Colorado.
I was so distraught at the time
that 1 didn’t even think about get-
ting the names of the wonderful
Texas angels who stopped. I hope
they will read about their good
deeds in your paper and know that
my husband and 1 are very thankful
for their help and concern.

Dear Editor,
So glad to see that you got
Mickey Cooper to submit more sto-
ries! I meant to write you with how
pleased I was to read his stories the
last time I saw one printed, but I
forgot.
Mickey is a wonderful and gifted
writer. His stories take you back in
“Rains County” time and make you
feel like you were a part of it. He is
making a great historian, and I hope
he keeps up the good work! Keep
after him to submit more. It’s a
great addition.

Last Friday, I was in court on sev-
eral cases. Some of you remember
the guy who dumped the construc-
tion debris off of County Road
3090. Well, he got stuck with a
$500 fine plus court costs. How-
ever, I did lose one case. Being
brought up in a football crazy part
of Texas, I don’t like to lose at any-
thing. So, I got a little upset, then I
thought about our young men and
women over in Afghanistan fighting
to protect our way of life. Our legal
system is one of the things that

I keep hearing reports of people
picking up trash along our roads. I
heard that Reba Buford picked up
litter on County Road 3080. The
Hartogs picked up four bags of
trash on their road. I saw “01’ Easy”
out picking up cans the other day.
