Whooping Lough
Not Necessary .
Austin Dec. 13 "Your child
can be protected! from whooping
cough hy the use of anti-serum
available for the immunization
of youngsters' according to Dr.
Geo. W Cox Stale Health Of-
ficer as he advised parents not
to take this communicable dis-
ease lightly.
"Since whooping cough is par-
ticularly dangerous for babies
the need' for early protection
against it is undisputed. Re
search ihas shown that prevent
ivci treatment can safely and ef
fectively be given at the "age of
two months1 or earner. Older
children who have been previous-
lv immunized should receive
booster doses of the vaccine.
Pointing out that Texas has
had over 10700 cases of whoop-
ing cough so far this year Dr.
Cox reminded parents that
whooping is sometimes fatal to
young children. It may also leave
the lungs and other affeefced
parts permanently damaged.
''In an effort to control whoop-
ing cough emphasis is placed up-
on the great importance of call
ing the family physician at any
time when a child is not in nor-
mal health. If the first signs of
a cold do not disappear after a
few days of good home care in-
cluding rest in bed and isolation
from other children the physi-
cian should be called as the cold
in itself may be dangerous. The
physician will prescribe proper
treatment and report any cases
of communicable disease to the
public health officer."

By Albert Steglich
. Large ridge type terraces are
being constructed' with a vhirl-
wind terracer on the farm of
District cooperatpr Leslie Town-
send northwest 6f Holland.
A 1500 cubic yard farm pond
has been staked for construction
on the farm of Billie Hunt Diat-
ribe Cooperator east of Bartlett.
Construction of a farm pond
dam containing some 2000 cubic
yards of earth is. being completed
by District Cooperator Ed Stab-
eno northeast of Bartlett.
An adequate cover Bermuda
grass on waterway areas for safe
terrace construction can be ob-
tained in one growing season
say Soil Conservation Service
technicians of Bartlett. The im
portant thing is to do the job
right. A well stirred mellow seed
bed with plenty of moisture on
land fertile enough to grow good
crops or good grass is esseiti'al.
Early row cultivations mowing
for weed control and light graz
ing are important factors which
help the original stand to grow
to a solid cover. Commercial fer-
tilizer or barnyard "manure al-
ways help when used right.
Where at all possible land
preparations1 -for spring seeding
and sodding of grass Should 'be
completed recomends Adrian I
Moore Soil Consevation Service
technician at Bartlett.-This fs
especially true on those . jvaferf
ways where grass is"- to be estab-
lished ih preparation for future
terrace construction: These wat-
erway areas could well be mark-
ed out shaped where" shaping 'is
needed' and the- land stirped
where moisture- will -perrnit.
Final success of any grass. plan t-i
ing depends heavily en la::5' prep-
aration prior to planting! Febru-
ary and March are good months
for sodding-Bermuda grass 'and
a mellow well stirred seed.; (bed
wMJft plenty of moisture is -important
says -Moore. King Ranch
Blue&tem responds to a firm seed
bed he adds and land prepara-
tion for some should be comple.t-
edby January or early February
in" order to allow plenty of -time
for rains to settle -the .soif for
March" and early April planting. .
