City set for one May race
Nick Todaro
nick@ennisdailynews.com
Filing for citywide elections
ended Friday, with all but one
race — Ward 3 commissioner —
decided outright by a lack of op-
ponents to face incumbents.
Ken Hackney has announced
his candidacy for the Ward 3
Commission seat, challenging
incumbent Ward 3 Commis-
sioner Jess Haupt in polling set
May 10.
The Ennis businessman pur-
sued the
Mayor Pro-
Tern seat in
elections last
spring, which
ultimately
saw Price Dis-
tributing’s
Matt Walker
win.
Hackney, Haupt
who has lived
in Ennis for more than 35 years
and graduated from Ennis High
School, said he wants to give
back to the
town that has
given him so
much over the
years.
“I will be
the eyes and
ears of the cit-
izens of Ward
3,” Hackney
Hackney said. “I will
strive to keep
them informed of any and all
business that they desire to
know. I truly believe in trans-
parency and openness and will
bring those qualities to the of-
fice. If a citizen of Ward 3 calls,
emails or stops me on the street,
I will take the time to discuss
their concerns and interests.
This is my philosophy in busi-
ness and I view the citizens of
Ward 3 as my customers.”
Hackney said he believes
Ennis is “poised for bigger and
better times to come” and wants
to be a part of that.

One more candidate filed for
the May 10 Ennis ISD Board of
Trustees election before the fil-
ing deadline passed on Friday.
Kelly McManus filed to run
for the Place 1 seat currently oc-
cupied by outgoing board
trustee Mack Boyd. Boyd an-
nounced he would not run for
re-election on Feb. 21.
McManus, owner of Valvo-
line Express Care in Corsicana,
graduated from Ennis High
School in 1984.
He has one son who is a soph-
omore at EHS and a daughter in
the third grade at Bowie Ele-
mentary.
McManus will run against
Rob Brown for the Place 1 seat.
Brown, a computer program-
mer for Guidestone Financial
Resources in Dallas, also filed to
run for the Place 1 seat. Brown
said he has three children in
Ennis ISD schools, with one set
to start in two years.
Jennifer Haden and Roger
Peden II filed for the Place 2
seat, currently occupied by
trustee Miles Strunc. Strunc an-
nounced Feb. 11 he is retiring
from the board because of
health concerns.
Haden said she is a commer-
cial escrow officer for Republic
Title of Texas in Dallas. She
said she has two children cur-
rently in Ennis ISD schools, and
one about to enroll.
Peden works as the adminis-
trator of IOOF Nursing Home.
He has two children who live in
Austin.
Student makes history

Accomplished crafts-
woman and Ennis High
School junior Kayla McCabe
couldn’t believe it when her
name was called for the
honor of Overall Reserve
Grand Champion at the San
Angelo Agricultural Me-
chanics Show.
McCabe, who’d earlier in
the day won first in her class
for her Adirondack Outdoor
Furniture and also added a
division championship title,
made history with the sec-
ond-in-show honor among
the 324 projects shown.
The daughter of Travis
Elementary School Princi-
pal Ryan McCabe had hopes
she might at best repeat an
Overall Grand Champion
Showmanship award from
the prior year. No project
from her division had ever
been into the top tier of com-
petition at San Angelo.
Then her name was
called.
“I was in awe that it hap-
pened,” Kayla McCabe said.
Her teacher, Mark
Roman, said the announce-
ment she’d taken first in her
division was enough to
make for an exciting day, but
the Overall Reserve Grand
Champion award was a huge
surprise.
“This was the first time a
woodshop project has ever
taken this title,” Roman
said. “This achievement
meant she had placed sec-
ond in the whole show, with
Grand Champion being a
$60,000 mobile service and
equipment trailer.”

acebook fuels EPD street racing investigation

Ennis police arrested three
men Wednesday pending
charges of street racing after
one of the suspects posted
videos of the alleged races on
Facebook.
Lt. Mike Hopson, head of
the Ennis Police Department’s
criminal investigation divi-
sion, said detectives will rou-
tinely check social media
websites for evidence of crim-
inal activity.
While doing so, Hopson said
the investigators found videos
posted publicly of several
street races allegedly taking
place on South Clay Street and
West Ennis Avenue.
“The videos were posted
fairly recently,” he said.
Police arrested two men fea-
tured in the videos: 35-year-old
Dietrich Kirvin and 25-year-
old Joey Sauceda. Det. Sgt.
Jason York declined to name
the third suspect.
York said Kirvin was al-
legedly seen in all of the
videos, and Sauceda was al-
legedly seen in a “burnout”
video which York said is re-
ferred to as “exhibition of ac-
celeration.”
York said more arrests are
expected.
“We’ve found people on
Facebook before, but this is
the largest scale, where we’ve
arrested several people,” York
said.
